Choosing ringtone on new EVO Shift

I am trying to set the ringtone on my new EVO Shift. The manual says I should hear a brief preview of each one before I select one. I cannot hear anything. Any ideas?
 
i was having the same issue the first day i got it trying to hear the HTC ringtones, i reset (turn off-turn on) the phone and then turned all volumes to maximum just to be sure and they have been working ever since.
