Christian App- Looking for Feedback

BMordenMV

Lurker
Hey guys! New member here so please bear with me :). I'm working with a partner on creating a new app for the Android and it will be targeted towards Christians. A quick background:

The app itself is called Moodverse, a webapp, and it fetches verses from the Bible based on the user's input for their mood/emotions (basically a mobile Concordance). There's also a rating system to help filter out bad results for future searches. We actually just listed our app in the marketplace a couple days ago, but I would love to hear some ideas from active Android users and/or Christians. I'm not that much of a coder myself (it's mainly my partner who does that), but I promise to listen to all suggestions and pass it to him.

P.S. I know for most forums posting links and images as a first post is a bad thing to do, so is there a minimum limit here? Thanks in advance for reading this!

just downloaded it...i'm not a fan of either version of the bible as options. If you had the amplified or the message it would be better. I'll play around with it though and see how the results are. I just wouldn't use it a lot though because of the version limit.

Note: I've not looked at your app.

Where did you get your content? I've considered a bible app but don't know where to get content without infringing on Copyrights. How do you handle copyright issues?

@Meshane83

Thanks for the download! We tried getting the NIV, but unfortunately, they would not give us permission to use at the moment and we don't want to step on anyone's toes copyright wise. I'll definitely look at the other versions you suggested and pass it along to my partner ;).

As far as results go, it works ~80-90% of the time on broad moods from our tests, and with enough feedback it will only get better.

@Bob Pual
Currently we're using public domain Bibles and asking for permission to use those that are under copyright.

So current goals:
Asking different companies for copyright permission to use their Bible.
Polish up search features.

Many versions of the Bible are not copyrighted. KJV is, but the copyright is not enforced outside the UK. I'm surprised you need an atheist like me to tell you these things :)

Thanks for correcting that up for me. I actually am not the one in charge of the copyright issues, but we are based in the US and all I knew was we were given the legal ok to use the versions we did :D.

Links are automatically disallowed for first-time posters, but after that it's up to staff such as myself to monitor and determine who are genuine contributors and who are no-good spammers. I get the feeling you're not one of the latter. :)

In addition to this section, which is primarily intended for support and "Is there an app for....?" type questions, we've also got a dedicated Application Announcement section for developers to publicise new releases, and an Alpha/Beta Test section where they can get users' feedback during development. Both of these may be of interest to you in the future, depending on how your project develops.

Good luck!

Thanks for the reply :). I did have trouble trying to decide what place to post in originally, but decided against application announcement since it was my first post. As for Alpha/Beta Test, it was a hard decision so it boiled down to random choice :D. With that said I'll be sure to take any more feature requests and once a new version is out, announce it in the correct forum section. Thanks :).

OP, here are a couple if initial thoughts before I've used it:

1. Great idea, hope you get copyright permissions for more versions
2. Location permission. What purpose does it serve? Not seeing an obvious purpose, I'm holding off on actually loading it

1. Thanks for the compliment. As for other Bibles, we hope so too and we are trying!
2. To be honest, I don't know why it showed up and neither does the member who submitted the app. The only real permission we need is internet access since the rating system has to be collected online (the app does have a backup offline version, but the search results will not be as accurate). This is our first app so bear with us with stupid mistakes like ticking some incorrect option for submission and I'll make sure to ask them what's setting off the location permission.

@Slug, thanks for the link. However, we do hope to create something more than just a Bible. There's nothing wrong with a Bible app, but we know there's already plenty of great ones in the market. We wanted something that hasn't been done or things that we felt were lacking in the app market. The feedback here as been great and we are definitely planning on improving what we have built.

For people who are just entering this thread feel free to add and share anything you think would be cool to see and I'll definitely pass it on to my team.

so far it hasn't gotten anything right. :( I'm keeping it though and will continue to check back in it whenever you send out updates. it has great potential!

Are you referring to the Authorised King James Version, completed in 1611? Surely that would be out of UK copyright and therefore public domain by now.

OP, would you be willing to post here after the GPS permission is removed? Since I don't have it installed, I won't get the update.

It's a catch-22 for us. Our search results will improve with more user feedback through the voting system, but to have a lot of users the search results have to be accurate :(. That said it's currently look through verses itself for a match in the mood you type and synonyms of the mood so we know there will be irrelevant results. However, our team is also using it and doing manual ratings until the userbase grows large enough so things will sort themselves out ;).

@RyanB- OP, would you be willing to post here after the GPS permission is removed? Since I don't have it installed, I won't get the update.

I will be sure to make an official thread as well as give a bump to this one :). I talked with the main developer who submitted the app and he only requested for internet access. He says he will see in the next release if he can specify for the GPS/location tracking to be turned off.

One might imagine so... but it has remained in copyright in the UK for all that time, and still is today.
