Root Christmas is Coming...And I need help

Hello All. I was informed by my wife that we are getting my kids a tablet this year, so I decided that the nook color was my best option. My goal for this tablet is, 1) Have full access to the android market (my kids love all of those free corny apps from the market), 2) Full flawless netflix running, 3) Webkinz (has anyone tried this and if so how does it run? I think its heavy flash), and 4) the internet for ICarly and several other kids related pages.

I just started my research on this, but I don't have much time. If I buy a new nook color now will it come as 1.3, blue dot or something else that needs special or additional programs to root and rom? Are there updated guides with working links to help me along? After reading a touch, I am getting a little nervous on rooting. I have screwed around with my phone quite a bit so I have a little knowledge on rooting and roms, but I have read nook guides that say install this, but not that if your on 1.3 instead try this (link is then broken).

I am considering just buying a card from rootmynookcolor.com and just be done with it, but cards do fail and then I would be at square one again. Thanks for any and all information on this subject. And please don't get annoyed with my noobish questions between now and Christmas. Thanks again.

I doubt you'll find any new NC's that aren't blue dot (new partitioning scheme) and v.1.3 software (although 1.4 is coming). If you buy from B&N in-store, you could request they repartition it for you.

Yes, sdcards are a pain, slow, and subject to failure. Once you go with the stock B&N Market and reader, it's harder to go to a custom rom, since you lose any purchased apps and have to buy them again.

I'd play with your new NC for a few days, make sure everything works, have B&N repartition it, then consider CM7. You'll also need a Sandisk micro sdcard (8 to 32 gb) for data and backups.

If there are broken links in our guides, please let us know. :D

Thanks for your response colchiro. What should I have B&N repartition the nook to? Is this something common or would they know that I'm up to something no good? :D

If I do get it repartioned @ B&N, would I just follow these guides located here on rooting and roms? Thanks again.

If B&N repartitions it, that means they'll restore it to the original scheme used by s/w version 1.2. AFAIK, that's the only way they do it. People that want to do this usually install a LOT more apps than books.

They probably have to have a tech in the store so not all stores will be able to do it at any store hour.

Wow. Your quick. Thanks. So buy a nook color, play with it a bit to make sure it works and then take it back to B&N to have it repartioned to 1.2? After that, root it with manualnooter and then install CM7 all from within the guides located here?

Is there a fee for repartioning if bought at B&N? Say I bought it at Walmart or elsewhere, would they still repart. it for me? I have never even stepped foot into B&N, so this should be interesting experience. I just want something cheap and androidish (Is that even a word?) for my kids to play with. Thanks again.

.. or buy a re-certified one for $119: http://androidforums.com/b-n-nookcolor/438462-buy-com-nook-color-139-free-shipping.html#post3539581

I don't know if they charge for repartitioning... I just know people report that B&N techs have done it. I would think it would be the same whether you bought it from them directly or via their fleeBay store.

They don't repartition to "1.2". 1.2 is the software version. The new partitioning scheme was implemented at the same time the 1.3 update came out.

If you just ask them to repartition it, that should be specific enough. If they ask why, tell them you don't read much for books and want more space for apps.
