Chrome app leaking data usage

Hi. New to the website, hope this is posted in the correct forum.

Over the past few months my Google Chrome app has had ridiculous spikes in single day usage of about 100-200MB, multiple times a month.

It started on my Galaxy Nexus, but I got a Nexus 5 shortly after and the problem has been occurring on it as well (I let everything import when I got the new phone). Last week (on my Nexus 5), I uninstalled Chrome to the phone's default version but it happened again on Friday; 184 MB on Google Chrome app. I'm hitting my cap about 3 weeks into the month.

I thought this was happening because I was always leaving multiple tabs open on my phone and they would load every time I opened the app, but even after closing all tabs after each use, it still has another large data leak.

I'm honestly not using that much data. The first time this happened was on a day that I was driving all day.

I'm seeking troubleshooting suggestions. Could I have malware on my phone?

I have background data turned off for chrome in settings... connections ... data... chrome... "restrict background usage". It causes me no problems. Try it.

I discovered that setting a few weeks ago, and turned it on. It has saved me 32 MB, but unfortunately none of that was not part of the huge spike on Friday.

It's definitely Chrome is leaking background data, when background data is restricted? And nothing else like Play services or G+?

I've got pretty much everything ticked to restrict background cellular data, except for a couple of IM, one weather and a news app.

I took screen shots (see link at bottom) of the individual days last month prior to rolling back the Chrome install on my Nexus 5. The screenshot that shows "uninstalled apps" is Chrome usage over last month which I took after I rolled Chrome back, however it's incorrect in that it was not actually background usage.

I believe it displayed this because the app was removed so the information about whether it was foreground or background data was no longer stored on the phone. If you see the screenshot for September 5th, you will see that it is nearly all foreground, which is what has been happening.

Today, I upgraded Chrome as it appears that the version does not matter for my problem. The removed usage still appears as removed apps.

I removed my help from this post as for postmaster of this thread had felt I was hijacking his thread
So out of respect's I shall move on good night!!

Umm. That is quite unrelated to my problem. You have 140 posts and you're hijacking threads?

As for an update on my front, since upgrading Chrome I have not had any spikes. However I'm not entirely confident the problem is solved just yet, as it had gone on for a few months with multiple versions of Chrome.

Remember your the newbie here and still you have unresolved issues. Kindness brings you help not the other way around good night good sir... No attitudes intended nor need to apply

What does your carrier's bill say? I've seen that usage on a Nexus S and a Nexus 4, but it was only the phone's idea of data. I had mobile data turned off and was using wifi only. Carrier showed no data usage.

For this month thus far, the usage as per my carrier is consistent with the phone's tracking. So far, there has been one instance of a "data leak."
