Chrome OS or "ChromeBook" Did you? I did!

i'm hoping i get one, both me and my brother applied. i don't think i'll get one, but it would certainly make this an amazing christmas, considering my laptop broke about a month and a half ago and havent been able to replace it so i've been using my crummy old desktop

I love the keyboard! I do have the same problem with the cursor moving while I'm typing though.

the keyboard works very well and is comfortable. it's mac-style, which is better than most laptop keyboards. my complaint is really that the texture of the keys (the plastic they use) seems a little "cheap" in that it's a little rough. maybe they intended it to be that way, i don't know. but i prefer a smoother texture to my keys.

also, my speakers are clearly wired out of phase. don't know if this is common to all cr48's or just a QC issue with mine.

I just received mine this morning quite unexpectedly (applied about 4 days ago).
I'm also hoping to find a way to tether to my Cliq (using PDANet with my other laptop); my office doesn't have WIFI - I'm latching onto another office's WIFI down the hall :)
Interesting to hear about LogMeIn; I'll have to try that. No major complaints yet, but haven't had it too long! I'm certainly going to be putting it through it's paces.
With these inexpensive laptops, could this be Google's answer to OLPC? Just wondering.

Woohoo! I got mine in the mail yesterday (I signed up about 10 days ago). No warning really, I didn't even know what it was until I opened the box!

Anyways, its pretty cool. I'm looking forward to more improvements on the OS, things like network connectivity (while up to par by linux standards) still seems a little rough on the edges when compared to OSX or Win7.

The hardware is awesome, I'm sure everybody has already heard a lot about that elseware. The big surprise for me was how cool the computer stays. Even in heavy use and while charging, the bottom is only moderately warm to the touch. There is a fan but unless you put your ear next to the vent you cannot hear it.

The browsing experience is excellent. Hulu is a little jumpy but still very watchable which is surprising given that the machine runs a single core atom with no accelerated graphics. This means that the flash performance is basically on par with windows.

I got one and I love it! It's a really neat concept and has a place in the world of netbooks for sure.

I am just asking a question, so take no offense, but what makes Google's efforts as good or better than a netbook? Why would I need an underpowered Google Netbook rather than a more featured netbook that allows me to work?

I am looking for a few reasonable answers to the basic question of why should I consider a Google Netbook, free or otherwise that prevents me from working?

I cannot use any of the various Cloud Computing methods or ideas. And, correct me if I am wrong (and too darn lazy to Google) but do the applications exist on the web or are there a provided set of basic apps like word processing installed on the computer? Just curious, so convince me.

I am not allowed to let the stuff I do out of my sight. So I can't use any web based storage of documents. I also need Word on my system not out there among the clouds. If I do not have Internet access (lacking WiFi, for example) I am stuck with a useless piece of hardware.

So what am I missing?

sorry, but i won't try to convince you! :)
and honestly, it seems like you've made up your mind, so i'd say you aren't missing much!

seriously, some people like this machine, some don't. in the end, you've got to use what you like and what works for you.
to me, and i think to a lot of people, cloud computing is a promising prospect. do i think this google beta device is a smash hit? no. it has some work to do. but i and others like the idea. even before knowing that google was going to be doing a beta, and certainly before applying, i have been trying to move "into the cloud" (sigh, i hate buzz words). for me there are still a lot of shortcomings, but it's not as if the idea is finalized and the technology is no longer making progress.
i will say this to you:
it may seem now that you can't "work" or be productive in the ways that you need on a google laptop, or in the "cloud" at all. but i think in the - possibly near - future you may be surprised. that's why i'm supportive of this project. to me it is a push for progress in a slightly new direction.

Add this...battery life smokes any netbook or notebook that I've encountered. 8-10 hours of batter....nice!

I wouldn't say it's better than a netbook, but it has a place among those that use netbooks. It's not great for work, as it doesn't let you use local storage (as far as I know), but for people who just surf the web and don't have confidential documents etc, it's a good product. For everything I do, other than managing my music files, it works great.

It is not a hardware issue. It has to do with my not being able to let controlled documents out of my e-sight. No matter how good the cloud computer is, I simply cannot use it because of legal reasons.

In my personal opinion, the cloud is upon us because the marketing people have decided it should be that way. There is absolutely nothing wrong with a computer that has the required applications installed.

i know it's not a hardware issue. you're needs are clearly already satisfied with what you are using. i think it would be a futile effort to try to convince you to use chromeOS.
there are still ways to keep your confidential documents protected. you don't have to store them on google. you can store them on your own personal network drive. this is not a popular option right now, but i find it to be a very powerful setup. you can set up your own "cloud" in your house that you can access anywhere while still maintaining the "privacy" of local storage.

and i certainly do not agree that "marketing people" have decided that the cloud is the way of the future. the cloud offers a lot of useful functionality and i think a lot of manufacturers and technology companies don't want to limit that functionality for their users. i don't think (other than chromeOS) there's really much of a push to do away with local storage and move completely into the cloud. in fact, right now i don't think it's likely we'll see the complete disappearance of local storage for quite some time.

but anyway, my point was simply that no machine will satisfy the needs of every user. if this "new" system does not do what you need to do, then it would seem to me to be counterintuitive to try to convince you to use it anyway.

Chrome OS: Not for confidential top secret stuff nor people in China.

In theory secret confidential documents stored in the cloud should be secure, provided they're properly encrypted and the account has not been compromised.

How many times have we heard about confidential data going missing and leaked, because laptops have been stolen, dumped, sold on Ebay, etc.? Same with harddisks and USB sticks. I think the UK Ministry of Defence is one of the worst culprits for this.

2 were shipped to my home town and 1 to my business town... a MONTH AGO.

I signed up a few days ago so I doubt I'll get one now.

Those who got their Chromebooks, which delivery service was used? FedEx, UPS, or USPS? I only ask because I got a "I missed you tag" from FedEx (which the only reason why was because I was sleeping...I work nights)...so I was just wondering if they were using FedEx or UPS or maybe both? I don't know...I have to go pick it up at the FedEx place because they needed authorized signature only...I dunno...

UPS but i dont think it matters (i hope so anyway for you).. Let us know i hope you get you one!! I love this little thing.

finally got it, took like 2 months but i got it. i was a able to wire tether it with the 2.2 tethering btw.
