Help City ID... how do you uninstall?

ive never gotten the nag screen. I open it, check my sub status and it says it's expired, however I can still enter in numbers to find out what city they're from, as well as all my contacts and unknown numbers show the city and state where they're from.

I know I'm not paying for it, and my free trial's expired, however I'm still able to use it

The reason you can not uninstall City (sucky) ID is because it is installed in the 512mb rom, along with the OS. That stuff is off limits and current apps have no way to get to it to uninstall it.

The good thing about Android is it is set up this way to avoid a lot of people hosing it, but bad in cases like this.

BTW, I never got any notices from City ID app and it still will run in the background- I have had my Inc since launch. City ID is a tick.
As su, you can indeed get rid of cityid. No need to flash. I simply moved the app to a directory I created on my SD card. That way its not totally deleted.

su means superuser, that means root. There's a step by step over in the Rooting subforum on how to get rid of CityID but you gotta root first.

I noticed when using app brain, there is an option to remove apps. Listed are all the apps on the phone (ones you installed from the market and others on the phone like dialer, sense or people).

City ID is listed there and theres an option to hit a red X and "delete" it. Does it in fact delete it or does it recognize it as part of the ROM and not let you? I haven't tried hitting the red x not sure what kind of craziness that would cause (if any).

Anyone else using app brain see this?

You need to be booted into recovery mode right now - that's the only time when the NAND is unlocked.

Once we get full rw on the NAND (hopefully coming soon since the bootloader has been unlocked), it should be possible for applications like the uninstaller to get the access they need.

Well, I guess I have to spend some time on the root protion.

But, on this subject, didn't anybody else notice that:

It was wrong the majority of the time ? The city posted was not where the caller is based, or was actually sitting.

Every time I use the phone, and hit the task killer, it's lited as running. Despite the fact the detail is no longer posted since I refused when the trial was up.

If it's anything like the way it appears on your bill, the city that shows up is actually the city that the tower they are using is in.

It's not like that. Both of our phones show up as the town where I signed up for them. NOT the town where we live or call from.

So not only can you not get rid of this virus, it's not real accurate either.

My trial of City-ID expired but when I send or receive calls, it still says the location. Is there something that I need to do, or is this normal?

Okay, I finally figured out how to delete this stupid thing.

First your phone needs to be rooted. I use easy root. It is very simple one button process. You can find it here:

http://www.unstableapps.com/apps/EasyRoot.apk

Then you need to get Root Explorer, it is available on Market Place.

Once installed just browse to the system/app folder and on the top right corner of the screen it will say: Mount R/W press it.

Now just scroll down to you see the cityid apk file long press it then select delete. If you get a error saying read only go back one step and make sure you mounted it read / write.

Finally that stupid city id is gone. :) Now I've attached the City Caller ID .apk file which works the same but is free and now unavailable on the market place.

It says right in the HTC manual that you can not remove any of the apps pre-installed on this phone

How many here will join a filed lawsuit against verizon for pushing advertising without permision. There is a law that companies can not send fax advertisments because of taking your ink, paper, and time. This app steals my time and distracts me while attempting to force a 3 dollar payment into my phone tied to my credit card. In NY state it is illegal and I will be filing a lawsuit.

If you look at my post in this thread from May you will see it will stop asking you to subscribe.

Further you think they are the first to preinstall app's on a phone that you can't remove? You need to get a grip your lawsuit won't hold water and the judge would throw it out and laugh in your face.

Anyone that posts on a forum that they are going to sue someone is just looking for attention and likely won't file and doesn't even know how.

This is not illegal. Nobody forced this phone or Verizon's service on you, you chose to enter into this agreement.

Annoying, yes. Illegal? Not even remotely.
