Root Claiming space.

When I plug my rooted nook and pull up the drives to drop files, it shows up as two distinct drives. One is clearly my SD card where I do all the file maintenance, the other is a 5gb drive labeled "MyNOOKcolor".

Is this space I can use for app install and/or storage... ie: Do whatever I want with it? Or do I need to forget it exists cause the system uses that space? Could I at least rename it to something like, "This space intentionally left blank"?

TIA for the education.
