Root Clear up some stuff for a noob?

Ok, had my phone less than a week, been researching and have rooted and got s-off.

I want to understand a bit more about how it all works.

1. Putting the PB31IMG.ZIP and doing the update on the hboot screen, this flashes the recovery mode right? Gives us root? Is everything that uses a PB31IMG.ZIP named file on the hboot screen for flashing the recovery? Can you install a rom that way?

2. Whats the difference between installing update.zip and selecting rom from a saved zip file? And is installing the update.zip from the recovery do the same thing as PB31IMG.ZIP?

3. If I want to install a kernal on stock rom, what method would I use? Are all Kernals and ROMs installed the same way? for example, flashing recovery uses PB31IMG, flashing roms uses selecting rom from recovery, and update is for modding pieces of the rom? Or is it all using really the same method of PB31IMG and the options on the recovery screen just do the renaming and rebooting for us?

Thanks for your help.

all the info you wanted to know:
http://androidforums.com/incredible...-friendly-how-tos-w-instructional-videos.html

in short
1)if you are rooted, you already have a recovery flashed, the only things you would flash with pb31img.zip name would be a new radio or flashing an alternate recovery. Or if you were trying to go back to stock.

2)in general you will always install rom's from a saved .zip file.

3) installing kernels is done the same way as installing a rom (through clockwork, a saved .zip file) just no need to wipe data/cache. (some people recommend wiping the dalvik cache).

in summary you will rarely ever use a PB31IMG.zip file.

I've read through the guides, and can follow the steps and get things done, I was just curious about what it was all actually doing.

does flashing the PB31IMG.zip flashing to a different location than going into recovery and selecting your .zip (rom)?

If I renamed a rom PB31IMG.ZIP and installed that way, would it work or would it break something? Is the recovery install options, just an easier user friendly way or is it doing something different?

I don't want to install roms that way, just curious.

I answered that question in my previous post... All roms are installed through clockwork... No pb31img.zip

I know the instructions say to do it that way, but whats the difference? Just curious.

I also see splash screens are installed with the PB31IMG.zip. What areas of the phone are these two methods flashing?

Also, is there a difference between update.zip and PB31IMG.zip and selecting your .zip file?

update.zip and PB31IMG.zip both get recognized in hboot, do they flash the same thing?

anyone know of a good place for technical details of all this? (not too technical :)

So no one really knows what their actually doing to the phone with all this flashing? Just following directions and getting the desired results?

Hboot has the ability to write to parts of the phone that you can't write to in recovery and also controls what can be written to, therefore is inherently more dangerous to use for flashing. Hboot is also used to flash recoveries.
Recovery is more useful because it gives you more options as to what can be mounted and doesn't check for signatures.
Basically recovery is used for the options available(wiping specific partitions, and the mounting abilities) and ease of use.

So, in theory, I could flash a rom from hboot (by renaming it PB31IMG.ZIP)? But this would just be more dangerous?

Whats the difference between putting a PB31IMG and flashing from hboot and an update.zip flashed from hboot? Then what about update.zip from recover

I see options for install from update.zip and select zip file, are they really the same? ie. when i select a zip from SD, it automatically renames it update.zip and does its thing?

I'm pretty sure a PB31IMG.zip rom would also have to contain a radio to work correctly and roms you find here don't include a radio.
Update.zip are flashed from recovery.
It has to be named update.zip if you are using stock recovery, clockwork allows for other names, it doesn't rename them
