Help Clearing cache in recovery

Has anyone booted into recovery to clear the cache? I have the first two Nexus 7's and several misc Android phones, but the cache cleaner is...well...weird. Most of the devices that I use will clear the cache almost immediately, but the Nexus 9 can take from 5-10 minutes. I booted my Nexus 7 (2013) and cleaned the cache twice while waiting for the Nexus 9 to complete the task. Also, the boot menu on the Nexus 9 is really ugly. Does anyone know if this a similar menu compared to most HTC devices?

I've cleared the cache many times on my nexus 9; though I'm using a custom recovery (TWRP).

Yes it takes a long time. Especially the first boot after wiping the cache.

As for looks, that is HTC's bootloader screen. It looks that way on all their devices.

I found that whenever my tablet is laggy, clearing the cache partition helps fix this issue.
