UPDATE: I was able to get Icarus installed without using windows!

Thanks to this post Install ClockworkMod Recovery 2.5.1.8 I was able to install 2.5.1.8 using the terminal emulator on my phone (the post has full instructions and links to download the needed files to your SD card).

Just to be safe, I rebooted to make sure it was at 2.5 instead of 3 which Rom Manager had installed.

From there, it was easy to install Icarus starting at step 7 on this post

Hope this helps anyone else who got stuck or had issues with the windows drivers

Original post:
I've been reading the forum for a while, but I have been unable to find anything regarding this, so here goes...

Over the weekend, I finally decided to spend a few hours learning about the Icarus mod and Clockwork recovery, but I have been unable to get past the "fastboot mode" (where you run "fastboot.exe erase recovery" from the command panel) where you have to erase the recovery image before writing the Clockworkmod recovery img. I have also unrooted (permanently) and enabled USB debugging.

I'm using Windows 7 and have installed the drivers when you first plug the Ascend into the computer. But once I run the script for "fastboot.exe erase recovery", it hangs on "Waiting for device" and won't continue - I've tried everything I can think of from verifying drivers are installed to selecting "Run as Administrator" and even tried running on both my laptop and desktop.

I was just wondering if anyone else has had this issue or knows of any work arounds for Windows 7? Thanks :)

Update: So after no luck getting Windows to talk to my phone, I installed ROM Manager from the Market which has ver 3 of the recovery mod, but according to the instructions the Icarus install won't work with version 3.

So it looks like I am out of luck in the meantime until a new Icarus update comes out that be used with ROM Manager.

i did the same thing....i cant get clockwork to work either.....went to the marketplace and got version 3...SOL with POS phone

I feel ya. I would like to get some more power out of this phone, but the biggest thing that has been killing me lately is the camera. I live in Portland and bike everywhere (I got rid of my car last year) and love to take pics on the go, but I feel like there is no way to take a clear picture with this phone (not to mention the lighting issues).

I use Retro Cam to make up for the poor image quality, but it still comes out a little blurry. I always make sure to check the lens and wipe it with my shirt, but aside from the ROM update not working, I'm also considering other options.

I feel like this was a good beginner phone, but now that I understand Android and how it works, I'm willing to pay a little extra for a phone with a GPU and better camera.

Excellent post, I hadn't even seen that thread. I think you may have just made the impossible become possible for a fair few more people!
