Root Clockwork Mod

Is there an easier method that can be done to get recovery other than TE method on the phone? Im new and will have my phone soon and dont want to mess it up. I can figure out root i dont care but would like recovery too. Or is there is a way to get GP`s kernel flashed right from the phone without recovery?

Ive been looking more into it and i have done TW before for rebooting that way and stuff and CWM was upside on a Merit i still have but the recovery still worked. But i dont like Merit roms as most of them are unzip and put into clockwork/backup restore. Im selling the Merit too if you and know of anyone interested.

Is Giantpunes kernel easy to flash without have CWM?

CWM always comes first. Then you can flash the kernel. Afterwards, or instead, you can flash a custom ROM (Tagged and Sleipnir both include giantpune's custom kernel). Installing the recovery is actually quite easy (trust me, I was as hesitant and worried as you were, which is why I wasn't a tester of it), and if you follow the guide to the letter, you'll be just fine.

Speaking of the guide, for anyone interested I've just updated it with links to all of the available ROMs.

Do i have to run step 7 root explorer to change the file name? Also i just bought one of these for about 50.00 for Best Buy will this more likely be VM ZV4 or 5? I noticed the two roms you mentioned too ive been researching alot before i get this in the mail. Im coming from a Zte Merit and i have the Op V in the past and all the roms. Backslide IMO etc. Also had Heros CDMAs too and there roms. But all these at 864 OC`d couldnt handle. So im anxious to see how the Elite holds up plus the 7 hr battery? I play with the Bionic too and those are up to only 1300 so far but stable.

We have gotten the Optimus Elite to a stable 1600MHz, OC'd. And just over two days worth of battery life (depending on your ROM). Take a look at the ROM list before making a decision.

You'll need either Root Explorer or Total Commander. Or something similar that has root permissions. Total Commander, however, is free.

It's newer ground that has been rarely tested (in fact, all I know of that's installed the recovery successfully on ZV4 firmware was my girlfriend, still works fine to this day) if you're installing on ZV4. Go into Settings > About > System Update and update to ZV5 before installing CWM. Then you can be free of worry with regard to compatibility.

Right system update good to know can i still system update without getting an account just yet? Also am i safe if i wifi from home and not hotspot? I heard about the hotpots. Im selling a couple of phones just to get a 35.00 card. I have a ZTe Merit and a Verizon Bionic wifi only still on acct bill is too high. but the Merit is on Prepaid good esn.

Whether or not you have service, you should be able to update and you for sure will be able to use wifi. Also, if you're lucky and VMU didn't update their website to block this just yet, you'll only have to pay $25 a month for them to get unlimited data, texting, and 300 anytime minutes. But initially you'd have to sign up for their $35 a month plan to get the same thing, then on their website if you go to account management, then change your plan, and at the bottom if it still says something like "my plan isn't listed here" and you click on it, it should give you option to go to the $25 plan, which gives you all of the same stuff the $35 plan does.

I had 35 to start with awhile ago they told me i couldnt change that. I didnt have it when it was 25.00. Are some of these roms AOKP? I heard about Cyano 9 soon cool. Does Nova launcher work on this yet? I know on the V it didnt. Some of the Touch wiz/holo launcher themes out there like 5.0 for the SGS work grt on all phones.

The Optimus Elite is Gingerbread (Android 2.3.x) based, Nova Launcher requires Ice Cream Sandwich (Android 4.0.x) and above (4.1.x), so no it does not work. Cyanogen Mod 7, 9, and hopefully 10, are coming soon, but we don't know when "soon" is. I started with the $35 plan, and unless they patched the site if you use the method I just described you can have it lowered to $25. They aren't going to tell you that. None of the ROMs are AOKP. Holo Launcher is the stock ICS launcher, but is compatible with Gingerbread and thus is the default launcher for many of the custom ROMs available.

It would be great if we could figure out a blur based rom. These are as smooth as butter. How is the 1.6 OC on Launcher Pro? Ive always used the 3d in settings. And upped the cache and scrolling speed all to 100.

Theoretically it should perform identically or similarly to how it performs on Holo Launcher. Sleipnir and Tagged are both smooth as butter, or at least should be. And don't forget to set up your CPU Tuner to have your Min be 2xx and Max 16xx whilst the governor is smartassV2.

And yes you DO have to do Step 7 in the CWM Guide, because if ypu don't go and rename/remove that file, the nect time the phone boots it will just restore the stock recovery and you'll have to flash cwm again.

Although if you are on ZV5 firmware, this is not necessary. At least, it wasn't for me.

That file gets created when you do the official ota update. I think its also included in leslie's roms, since they were created from a phone which had been ota'd. If your phone came from the store with zv4 or zv5, and you didnt install the update from VM, then you wont have the script, so no need to try and remove it.

The loophole to go back to the $25 plan is closed. However it has been reported that if you are already on the $25, you can keep it by just swapping phones online (with elite or lower, only).

I believe any data connection, wifi included, will allow an ota update.

Got my.phone I'm rooted but this CWM.can't figure out. Is there an easier way? There has to be? I did all the commands I get an error after. su is fine but the problem I have is not sure if its / sdcard/ or /sdcard/? And is it blkOp14 or blk0p14?

This is the only way, and it's much easier than it looks. It's just long is all. You type it exactly as it appears, and you're good. It appears as /sdcard, so type in /sdcard not / sdcard.

And blk0p14, not blkOp14. Granted, it can be difficult to tell - so you'll have to look closely. And if it gives you an error about not having enough space, that's normal and you can and should proceed ahead anyway.

mmcblk0p14......it is a number 0, why the hell would there just randomly be a capital O when all other letters are lower cased.

Is this the same thing instead of all that long stuff Type su and tap the [Enter] key (Allow root access if you are prompted by Superuser/SuperSU)

4. Type cat /dev/zero > /dev/block/mmcblk0p14 and tap the [Enter] key

5. Type dd if=/sdcard/part_13_cwm_9_21_11_54.bin of=/dev/block/mmcblk0p14 and tap the [Enter] key

Or this: rename the file on your Sdcard to "recovery.bin" and the command that says " dd if=/sdcard/part_13_cwm_9_21_11_54.bin of=/dev/block/mmcblk0p14" and replace it with " dd if=/sdcard/recovery.bin of=/dev/block/mmcblk0p14"

Between ".bin" and "of=/", there is one space. Between "dd" and "if=/" there is one space. Also, if you placed the .bin for CWM on your internal SD card, the phone's memory you're given access to when it's plugged into your computer that should be labeled "Internal", then all you have to type for the /sdcard/ part is just that, /sdcard/. If you placed the .bin on an external sdcard (memory you've added physically), you would replace /sdcard/ with /sdcard/_ExternalSD/ instead.
