Root ClockworkMod Recovery Backup Problem

When trying to back up my MT on the newest version of CWM, near the end of the backup it trys to backup /data and I get an error along the lines of "Could not back up /data". The rest of the backup went successfully (I hope). I was wondering if /data is important to the backup and if I want to go back to that ROM after flashing a new one it would still work.
Any help is appreciated!
 
I think this was discussed before. I also had trouble recovering from back up.
Flash old CW Mod (I prefer lime themed by b_randon).
 
First time I have heard about this but it would make a lot of sense. My phone crashed and none of my nandroid backups worked at all. At best I could get to the home screen without most of my data at worst I only had a frozen M logo.

Do you have a specific version you recomend? I'm running cwm 5.5.0.4 which supposedly finished backing up all my data (data is important for all your apps and settings). If I downgrade to a previous version will I need to create new backups?
