Root ClockworkMod Recovery not working

I am trying to do a backup of my phone to install a new ROM, but when I click back up in ROM manager I just reboot to a red triangle.

So I tried flashing clockworkMod recovery and the same problem.

I found out that if you flash an alternative recovery than back it can fix it. However the alternative recovery button is greyed out so I can't do that.

How can I fix this?

Boot into recovery, I think its called recovery and back up or something like that, and back up. Do not use rom manager!

Just to check, how are you booting into recovery? What IB is suggesting is rebooting the phone while pressing the "volume down" key & selecting "recovery" from the bootloader menu. That should get you into the recovery that was installed when you rooted, rather than anything ROM manager is temporarily fake flashing.

If that is what you are doing, and it's still giving a red triangle, then can you give us some more information about the history of what you've been doing with your phone? Red triangle sounds like the original recovery, rather than a custom one, which you shouldn't have if you've rooted in the modern way (i.e. using unrevoked).

In my experience Rom Manager permanently installs ClockworkMod Recovery.

Every time in the past when I have booted while holding the volume down button I have got into clockworkmod recovery.

I rooted quite a while ago. I don't know what revoked is. Maybe I used it. But I remember a very long guide on how to root.

I have installed quite a few ROMs since then and always used ClockworkMOD when I am in recovery. Either by manually booting into it or by rebooting using ROM manager.

OK, so maybe you rooted using one of the older methods, which unfortunately I don't know much about. Unrevoked replaces the original recovery with clockworkmod (by default - you can use it to install a different one), but I have a feeling that the original rooting methods might not have done - hence ROM manager's installation of a custom recovery in addition (which I called temporary because while it does persist through reboots - wouldn't be much use if it didn't - it doesn't survive some operations and has to be downloaded again).

So, my guess is that the clockwork installed by ROM manager is messed-up, and of course it requires that before it will let you flash an alternative recovery which is why that option is greyed-out. You tried "flash clockworkmod recovery" again, but did that fail, or just not download?

So the problem is one of how to install a working recovery image. I expect that just running unrevoked might do it, even with the phone already rooted, but am slightly reluctant to suggest it as I've not tried this myself and there may be some subtlety I'm unaware it. If you are S-Off I expect it's quite simple. Hopefully someone will come along who has done this (or talked someone through it).

Nope. It puts "update.zip" on your sd card and uses fake flash to boot into it.

The only (easy) way of truely flashing recovery is if you root via unrevoked.

If you rooted using unrevoked, turn off the phone, hold vol down and press power. Then you can select true flashed recovery this way.

I rooted with an old (pre unrevoked) method. After a while I was sick of not having a true flashed recovery. So I ran unrevoked (which flashed recovery successfully). The only other thing I had to do was clear cache on the super user app.

I did this. Works fine, except superuser app will not work until you clear cache in manage applications.

I've been doing a little experimenting with ROM manager, and have found that if I remove update.zip from my sd card's top directory and all recovery zips from the clockworkmod/download directory tree (i.e. in any subdirectories of that) it's enough to convince the app that I don't have one and for it to download the recovery again when requested. It might be that something like that can get your ROM manager working again.

My own opinion is that a proper install of clockwork is better, but for a quick fix you could try something like this.

Unrevoked doesn't wipe anything. If unrevoked fails and stops you booting, its nothing restoring a backup will fix

Ok I will try flashing with unrevoked tonight then.

Any recommendations of good ROMs?

I am currently running Modacco R9 with LauncherPro but it is a bit slow and old now.

I want it to be fast (not hang when I try to open texts which it currently does) and pretty.

A decent chunk of battery life would be nice too!

Ok I will try them out when I get home. And there is always r11 if I miss sense.

Launcher pro has got pretty slow recently. (not sure if it is just my ROM) are there any other good alternatives that are a bit snappier?

Launcher pro is snappy for me, it depends on rom performance though. Like windows, they get bogged down after a while and need a good clean out.

OK well Back from holiday and I ran unRevoked3

I still get the red triangle when booting into recovery.

unrEVOked says:

ERROR: Failed to get root, is your firmware too new?

So now what do I do?

Is it possible to do a complete wipe and install a new ROM and recovery then? Risky because there will be no backup...

Well it shouldn't be too new.

-Confirm you didn't do "setInstallLocation 2" to force apps to SD (or any other methods to install apps on sd - EXCLUDING a2sd+ using an EXT)

-Factory reset (could to a titanium backup first) then retry

-Could flash another rooted stock rom. See if that will allow it.

-S-off and flash recovery that way.
