Root CM 10 Boot Loop :(

Hello,

I unlocked my HOS today. No problem.
Installed TWRP ... success.
Installed SU. No problem. At this point I played with the phone for a few hours.

Then I flashed CM 10 and I am stuck in a boot loop.

I cleared the cache, dalvik, and system before I flashed the ville package. I did a MD5 check too. I tried reflashing and still boot loop. It really is a beautiful boot animation, but I want to play with CM 10. Any suggestions to help?

UPDATE: Here are the steps I used to fix my problem.

Here is what you have to do. Most of us are having problems because are Hboot is too high.

1 Download CM10 - http://get.cm/?device=ville
2 Download Gapps - http://goo.im/gapps
3 Wipe (cache, dalvik, system)
4 flash rom from recovery
5 flash gapps from recovery
6 "fastboot flash boot boot.img" from command prompt in the folder you have adb. You get the boot.img from the Rom zip

That should do it.

I waited over 10 minutes the first time... maybe over 20. My battery was at 54% when I flashed, but then it was down to 30% after I did a hard reset to reflash. After I reflashed I waited over 5 minutes for it to boot.

I guess the next steps might be to redownload, rewipe, and try again?

What hboot version do you have? Versions 1.13 or higher will not allow you to flash the boot.img in TWRP (but you can work around it, let me know if this is the case). If it's 1.09 or lower, I would suggest that you try flashing it again from scratch. Usually it takes a while to boot the first time, but 10-20 minutes should be plenty. Did you try holding the power down till it reset and seeing if it would boot okay after that? It's worked for me before.

HBOOT is 1.09.0000

When I plugged it in USB today Windows said that the SD card needed to be scanned *shrug*

I let it scan and autoifix any errors, then copied the new CM10 zip (Went from 8/26 "Experimental" to 8/28 nightly)

I rebooted into TWRP and backed up my present system (rooted stock)

Wiped system, cache, and dalvik 3 times each, then reflashed. I got the boot animation for 20 minutes. Did a hard reset (power for 10 secs) and got the boot animation again for over 10 minutes.

I'm not sure what is happening? Do I need to flash g apps to get it to boot?

Edit: went in and flashed g-apps... still no boot.

Try manually flashing the boot.img via fastboot ("fastboot flash boot boot.img"). And make sure that you put the boot.img file in with the fastboot.exe.

Sorry to go off OT, but how is the latest build of CM10 running? Pretty good?

Thanks for all your help so far agentc13. It love the community here.

I was out of town over the weekend. I did the command line boot like you said of the 9-4-2012 nightly. It is still stuck on the boot animation screen.

I guess I am going to relock it, then start over from scratch. Something must have glitched along the way.

Crap, did I just brick this thing? I hit factory reset (on accident) in TWRP. Now my SD card won't mount, backups are gone... Any clue?

Update: I am able to access my "SD card" but it was wiped. I am going to try to get CM10 working because my backup of stick is gone now.

You can mount the sd card in TWRP2 to put ROM files on (or anything else). You could also relock the bootloader to run the RUU (like you mentioned) and start over. I will try to find the post where I posted those steps.

Here's the thread: http://androidforums.com/one-s-all-things-root/592451-how-flash-ruu.html

You just need to run the RUU for your carrier/model. If you have an S4 version of the One S (which is the only version that CM10 will work on) you can pick the RUU from this thread: http://androidforums.com/one-s-all-things-root/560329-ruu-download-mirrors.html or from here if you can't find it in that thread: http://www.filefactory.com/f/cf061f69b5bf7878/

Alternatively if you have the S3 (villec2) version (which I don't think you have, unless you flashed the TWRP2 for that version) that is the issue as CM10 is for the S4 (ville), but the RUU's can be found here (I haven't had time to download/mirror those yet): http://www.filefactory.com/f/11f2bd9c14cebbbe/

I see a Jelly Bean! I had already switched to CWM Recovery so I tried that and presto!

It's downloading my apps, contacts, etc. Google Now is working. All my wifi passwords came over. Looks pretty nice so far!

Thanks a ton agentc13!

Glad you got it all working. What was it that eventually got this to work? I'm at the same stage you were at (hanging at CM10 boot animation). Thanks!

I switched from TWRP to CWM Recovery. Then I reflashed and it worked. Many people used TWRP with no problem so I don't know what happened?

CM10 is nice:

Pros
Jelly Bean buttery smoothness
Google Now
Tweaks galore (display antenna strength, reboot options, menu button assignment, etc)

Cons
No Stock Camera (No Sense anything)
Still buggy (have to keep selecting default input, widgets disappear, etc)

I will switch back to CM10 once/month or so to see how the updates are coming. I am hoping some Sense stuff can be brought over once the official JB build is out.

I have hboot 1.19 on software 2.13.651 and I am s-on but rooted. Could you share I would go about flashing CM10 in my situation?

You would flash the ROM like normal, but you would need to copy the boot.img from the ROMzip and use the command
Code:
fastboot flash boot boot.img
in order to flash the kernel and get the phone to boot after the flash.

The process is similar to how you flash the recovery (instructions here: http://androidforums.com/one-s-all-things-root/543328-how-unlock-bootloader-install-recovery-root-your-htc-one-s.html#post4331630). So you can follow that guide but use the command here instead of the one there and make sure you are putting the boot.img file into the correct folder (like you would for the recovery).

I have a really busy week so sorry for the late reply (I also will probably take a while to respond to any other questions until this weekend, so bear with me).

I have a step by step guide with pictures for fastboot flashing in the evo 4g lte forums.

On mobile or I'd link. Should be titled how to install kernels on hboot 1.15+

I was able to get to the CM loop and was stuck there so I found this thread and followed all of the instructions. When I enter in the command prompt it says everything is done correctly so I reboot and then now it's just stuck at the htc quietly brilliant screen. What went wrong? :( Thanks

Okay I was able to fix this and finally get CM10 working. However there are no google apps and I can't sign into my account to sync anything. What can I do about that?

Clockwork mod recovery took over from TMRW and whenever I click on something like install zip from sdcard it just goes to the clockwork logo and does nothing. Clicking on power takes me back to the menu.

I've tried the following and was boot looped too :
1 - wipe data+cache+dalvik-cache
2 - install ZIP
3 - flash boot.img (taken from ZIP)
4 - reboot

if it matters it is unofficial port for my huawei u8160
