Root CM7 - Data switches itself on

TheOnlyRick

Newbie
Any thoughts on why data switches itself on?

I'm running the latest stable CM7 build. I've got a few apps on there (most likely culprits prob could be Phoneweaver, Extended Controls).

Is this a 'feature' of CM7?

Thanks, Richard

Cheers Dan, it take a look.

I ain't running cm7 but last time I saw it was settings - wireless and network settings then at the bottom.
Though iv just looked on Redux and that option ain't there.

On my phone (on cm7) I follow

settings > wireless & networks> mobile networks (bottom of list) > data enabled

There is a tickbox for data enabled which you must untick to disable mobile data

For easy access to the setting just make a widgetsoid (download from market) switch on one of your homescreens.

I've got two widgets that can turn data off - one is native to CM7 (perhaps as part of ADW Launcher?).

The other is Extended Controls.

Certainly data has switched itself on having been turned off using the EC widget. (And weirdly once I could continue to surf even though I saw that it had renamed my APN to three.co.ukextendedcontrol meaning it should be *impossible* for me to be connected.)

Anyway, I'll take a look at the setttings. If I do need to install another widget, I'll do that. Thanks,

Richard

PS: I dunno if my expectations were too high, but I'm not really loving CM7.
- It's crashed a few times (where the screen doesn't light up, but the hard keys do), so I have to pull the battery
- I've had FCs from Spotify and K9 mail, which I've never had before
- The screen brightness is all over the place (but I remember seeing a setting that relates to that)
- Data switches itself on
- The battery life doesn't seem to be any better (see above)
- The market is slow to start downloading apps
- The UI isn't as polished as Sense (to my eyes)

Or long press the mobile data toggle on the notification pull-down power control widget - that takes you to the menu (works generally for those toggles).

If you are using 2 different methods to set this, it might be worth going to the settings menu itself and seeing what state that thinks the phone is in. I have occasionally managed to get a widget out of step with the actual phone settings.

I've only had that once, when running a nightly and fighting with a duff WiFi connection. What kernel are you using, and do you use a screen-off profile?

Don't use Spotify but never had a problem with K9.

You can tune auto brightness, but it's not a strong point of the ROM.

It's generally the smaller ROMs, Redux and Oxygen, that get the most praise for battery life, though I realised the other day that what I thought of as "a not so good day" was still better than I used to get from Sense. But it does depend on usage. Many of us also use custom kernels on top of the ROM itself - look at people's sigs.

Haven't met the other problems.

Polish is in the eye of the beholder ;)

Seriously, I use another launcher rather than ADW. Apps may be less polished than the Sense equivalents, but these are base android rather than CM. Personally I've come to like some of them more, use 3rd party alternatives for the rest. But I didn't like many aspects of some Sense apps.

But there is no right or wrong answer to ROM choice - these are personal preferences. If it doesn't work for you, just try another.

Quickly writing this on phone (and Hadron - I will reply to your post tomorrow).

How do I manage sound alerts? There's too much of alerting!

I've only got a couple of apps listed under profiles, yet it's constantly making noises at the smallest provocation!

Hadron - one quick thing.

Thanks, all I had to do was stop using Extended Controls. The native widget worked, except for one time this afternoon.

The access point had been renamed with apndroid at the end. I don't ever remember installing apndroid, but I did have the same issue ages with the stock OS.

This time, whenI reset the name of the APN it didn't give me back the settings of three.co.uk, which is what I wanted.

after a couple of restarts, the correct Apn returned...

If you are...

What launcher do you use? Coming from an MS background, I've always been reluctant to install apps unless I'm fairly sure I'm gonna use them. If I try something out, and uninstall it, is it a clean process?

Not using Extended Controls for certain functions has improved things (eg GPS toggling in EC works, but it also takes you to the GPS settings page).

I'm using the latest stable build (as of a week ago or so). Although I like the sound of nightlies, I also like the idea of *not* bricking my phone when I've still got another 15 months of contract left!

I don't use a 'screen off' profile.

The anoyance about APNdroid being added to my data APN was partially sorted when I found out that Phoneweaver (which I use) uses that suffix. As a test I uninstalled Phoneweaver, but I've still had it happen.

TAlso a couple of times, my phone just forgets the APN details.

I'm still getting various glitches:

  • the crashes where the screen doesn't (neither image nor backlight), but the hard buttons light up.
  • Spotify glitching in a very frustrating way (it plays, but it does it like I'm pressing Play/Pause a few times a second.)
  • when I switch on WiFi, the phone connection drops for a few seconds.
and others...

Basically, at the end of writing all this, I've concluded i'm gonna do another wipe and manual reinstall of CM7, but not use Titanium. I'm guessing I reinstalled a lot of kludge that hasn't helped my phone...

Cheers, Richard

I've heard of the "black screen, buttons lit" glitch but don't experience it myself. Don't have the WiFi thing.

Uninstalling is cleaner than on Windows. If an app makes a directory in SD that isn't removed, but otherwise it seems pretty clean. I'm using Go Launcher today, but also use Launcher Pro.

Hi TheOnlyRick, not sure if you sorted this, but as i'm on CM7 i thought i should help out (especially as it took me a while to find how to sort out all my notifications).
Go to Settings -> Profiles -> default - >
Then under each application listed you can choose to override the default notification sound/vibration/led notification for that app. Set it to off if you don't want notifications for that app.
If you use gmail, then under gmail's own settings you can choose whether you want each mail to cause a notification or just once whilst emails remain unchecked.

Hope this helps

Thanks Mathias - So for an app that is making noises and isn't specified, I should add it to the list and then set it to No?

My phone makes a sound when I join or disconnect(?) from WiFi or 3g. Any idea what app that would be?

I use K9 mail, I'm sure I remember there being an appropriate setting from my 'pre-flashing' days... (If not, I might be able to switch it off for K9, and use the single alert from GMail.

Cheers again, Richard

That glitch is well reported when using those search terms. Clearly before I was using the wrong search terms!

From what I've found (FWIF?) the most likely looking cause is the EXT partition. Firstly 'cos someone else mentioned it. Secondly, 'cos last time it crashed for me, it was just after boot up. The shell seemed to be working, but various apps had their Android system icons, rather than their actual icons. I wish I had been clever enough to note down exactly which icons were missing - I bet they were all those installed on SD.

Yeah add a profile for an app you want to change when it's not currently listed. Haven't needed to do that myself though.

My phone doesn't make a sound or notify me when changing status of wifi or 3g. I have had a thorough look through the standard settings and CM settings and couldn't find a check box to enable/disable that. So i guess that another app that you have downloaded may cause this to happen.

I'm pleased to say that after some clever and indepth technical analysis, I was able to make the necessary changes to the file system and thereby resolve the issue: I wiped my phone and started again.

The previous (and first) time I put on CM7, I immediately I reinstalled all the apps and data, (and put an SD card that had all the apps from the stock OS). This time I've done it all from fresh, and so far, so good.

No continous sound alerts, no random dis/connections, no weird screen distortions (although that one was definitely my fault).

I've now got a couple of things I need to restore manually from my other SD card. Fingers crossed...
