CM7 on MT

Should I do a factory reset before I install CWM ?

You don't need to, in fact you probably shouldn't so that you can create a backup of all your stuff before you flash anything else. You can then do a reset and back that up too, so you have a clean version of the stock ROM.

I've been playing with my new CM7 install this morning. So far so good. I think I'm going to like it but I do have two questions.

On the status bar on top it keeps giving me a message saying I need to update my binary CU or something like that....what does this mean and if I need to then how do I do it?

2nd question...Since I changed over to CM7 I don't have a voice mail button on my phone. Before I did....how do I check my voice mail..not that I ever get any calls but curious?

Thanks a bunch.

David

1. I think you mean the SU binary? Update it, you technically do not have to, but you should. Updating won't hurt anything. This is for the superuser stuff that you want running on your phone since CM7 is rooted.

2. a. You can long press one from the dialer and that will call voicemail.
b. You can pull down the notification bar when you get the voicemail notification and use that to call it.
c. You can make an entry in your phone book that is your own number and label it voicemail. Then on your home screen long press an empty space to pull up the menu. Select shortcut. Select Direct Dial. Select the voicemail you just created.

Any of the above will work (and I am sure there are other options as well) so take your pick and do what suits you best.

What I'm trying to say, is that I have a lot of apps and I don't want them to cause conflict with CWM or CM7 when I installed these programs. So would starting with a factory reset be a good idea,or not really necessary.
Thanks for the reply. Nate

Your apps will not interfere with CWM. It is just your recovery options, not a system OS. When you flash CM7 you will do a factory reset (wiping /system /data and /cache). Which is where all the information for those apps are. I would recommend making sure your phone is rooted and installing titanium backup. Back up the user apps you want to keep using that, then when you wipe it all installing CM7 you can restore what you want using titanium backup. You can also just start it all from scratch and download everything you want from the market.

You need to root for titanium backup. You dont need it for anything else involved in flashing a ROM.

Agentc - THANK YOU! This guide was awesome! I followed your steps and Im now running MIUI! THANKS!

A couple of general questions.

1)
I made a nandroid backup as suggested of my stock ROM. If I choose to, will that backup return me to EXACTLY where I was on the stock ROM before installed MIUI?

2)
I spend last night re-downloading my everyday apps to the MIUI ROM. As Im using he same SD card that I used in the stock ROM, if I now move apps to the SD card, isnt it going to mess up my already existing apps that were moved to the SD card from the stock ROM? And what if I go back to the stock ROM, will it still be OK with the apps on the SD card that have now been "updated"? Am I making any sense at all? :)

Thanks so much!

1. Yes. It will be exactly how it was when you created the backup.
2. I do not move my apps to the SD card. This phone has plenty of internal memory and I like having the space I would use on moving apps for music/podcasts/books/etc. So I can not tell you what would happen. You could copy all your SD card files to your computer, save it as stocksd or something you want to call it. Then you can wipe the SD card and start clean. You could also start with it how you backed up and see what happens.

Thanks to all the great people on this forum CM7 is now on my phone running great the only thing I'm missing is speech recognizer where can i get this?

I tried installing CM7 version 5.0.2.6, which I believe is the current version, but it aborts.

It says:

Finding update package....
Opening Update Package...
Installing Update...
Installation aborted.

Could this be due to an older version of CWM?

those instructions seem to be about the same as the video, except it recommends the factory wipe and format, so I tried that and then I tried to load the rom, it still aborted.

Then the phone got into a mode where it would only vibrate, I had to load the image folder back onto it to get CWM to come back up. I have the rom zip file on my SD card, but when I try to choose it and install it just aborts.

I noticed it's listed under Android 2.3, am I missing something there? I thought we were all stuck on 2.2 until Virgin Mobile did something. I used Gingerbreak. Not sure why the CM7 rom won't work. Restoring my nadroid backup for now.

CM7 is 2.3.7 You are only "stuck" on 2.2 if you don't want to install a custom ROM that is 2.3.

Are you choosing "install zip form sdcard" or "apply update from sdcard"? You want to pick install zip form sdcard.

Definitely doing the 'install from zip' command. I believe gingerbreak said v2.3, but if I check settings on the phone it's 2.2

How are you guys getting to 2.3? If I check updates there are none available, and I haven't seen any mention around here about being able to upgrade. I distinctly remember everyone being grumpy because the Boost mobile users got a push update and we didn't get anything.

in looking into updating to 2.3 I came across this: Motorola Triumph Gets Android 2.3.5 Gingerbread Thanks To CyanogenMod

Other than that I'm coming up with nothing on how to update Android. The phone is only on virgin mobile right?

When you follow the instructions in the post I linked and install either CM7 or MIUI, you will have android 2.3.7 It is NOT an update from Virgin Mobile or anyone else. It is available because the nice developers here took the time to make it. There will be nothing available when checking for updates (at least as of now) you have to download the ROM and flash it in CWM.

Gingerbreak works on some phones with 2.2, not all of them, but it does for the Triumph. Gingerbreak will not do anything to upgrade your phone anyway, it just will give you root access.

You downloaded the correct files of the specific ROM you wanted to flash? If you have the right files and follow those steps it will install. Make sure you have the updated version of CWM as well, because many ROMs wont flash with the older versions.

Ok, looks like I was mistaking the CWM zip for the CM7 zip, stupid error on my part... I've gotten it installed, but I think I may have messed up the GAPPS install. Is it supposed to be installed the same way as the ROM? I clicked install from zip, and pointed to the GAPPS zip file, and it ran. But for some reason I don't have my camera, maps, gmail, navigation etc.

My contacts and everything worked, it's synced with my Gmail account, but some essential apps seem to have been omitted. Is there a clean way to get these back or did I mess up the Gapps install? I really didn't see any specific info about how to install them, just a link to the file and a lot of warnings about how important they are.

I used the most recent CM7 & gapps zip

As long as you have the Android Market, you should be able to get the apps you are missing (maps, etc). There might be some you can't, let us know if that is the case.

Thanks for all your help!

It seems that some of the desktop icons were just no longer connected to the apps. Everything is there, and all my user data is there as well.

To anyone else thinking of trying this, Titanium Backup will really help get you back up and running as well. This is what basically worked for me, once I figured out the few things I was doing wrong:

1. make Titanium backup (batch backup all apps/data)
2. make Nandroid backup (saves your ass)
3. install latest CWM
4. download and load CM7 & Gapps onto SD card
5. use CWM to do factory reset, format cache & system
6. use CWM to install CM7 & Gapp zip files
7. restore apps using Titanium backup and fix broken desktop icons
8. sucess!!

Thanks again!
