Root Cognition is AWESOME

Just flashed the Cognition 2.2 ROM today which took about 10min and it's the best thing since sliced bread.

Those guys over at Designgears are magicians.

I've been thinking about running Cognition. If I was to flash my phone, would you guys recommend the latest version, or go with the stable Eclair version? Also, does Cognition remove the AT&T apps on the phone?

If you flash the 2.2 version of Cog then yes it removes the At&T apps. Not sure about the Eclair version.

I just did this today, following these instructions, and I had no trouble. I love it! I'm only bummed because I wanted to be able to use the circle battery mod but I don't have the right kernel or something.

Anyway, I recommend the instructions at the link I posted-- super easy. I did one thing different, though, I did everything from my phone-- didn't copy anything to the device using my computer.

I finally got brave enough to install the latest Cognition build, and am so glad I did. Froyo rocks! The upgrade was relatively painless, although I don't understand how to get my apps back from Titanium, but that is minor. Reloading them works. My Captivate is much smother and happier now. Well, it might not be happier, but I am, and it's all about me! Thanks to everyone involved in putting this together!!!!! Wish you all could help ATT out...........

Reinstall Titanium from the Marketplace. Then you can either batch install all of the apps you had on your stock 2.1 or you can pick & choose which ones to reinstall individually.

Hope this helps.

OK, I need some help. I was following these instructions. I successfully rooted the phone. I installed Clockwork Mod ROM Manager. I get to the point where I am trying to backup my current ROM, but when it resets I get the error E:Can't open /cache/update.zip (bad) Installation aborted. How can I fix this?

Update: OK. I reset my phone and I tried it again. It looks like it is working now.

Ha. I said I had no problems, but that's exactly what happened to me. At that point I selected "install packages" and I believe that fixed it. It should boot back up (or you'll have to tell it to boot back up) and then you'll have to initiate the backup again from ClockworkMod Rom Manager.

Well I got it to work, but I think I did something wrong somewhere because all of my stuff got wiped (unless that is what is supposed to happen). So I am building back all of my contacts and apps. I downloaded Rom Manager and Titanium Backup, as well as BusyBox. After I installed busy box it said that there is another version, what am I supposed to select after this? I didn't want to mess around with it too much and screw up stuff. Any other recommendations for stuff I should download? I am really enjoying Cognition so far, it is a lot faster. I though that it came with an overclocking program, where can I find it?

Thank You! I didn't realize the backed up apps were at the end of the list. Doh....

Love running Froyo. Much quicker than eclair!

Just a Cognition FYI: I just flashed the latest rom and kept getting the error 'com.android.phone has stopped unexpectedly'. Cognition runs fine and I really wish I didn't need to revert to my old rom because it was a huge improvement. When I remove my SIM it runs fine, but is crippled with the SIM in. Anyone else have that error?

I can not receive calls when using 2.3b Seems my 3G don't start, tried everything. I flashed back to enclair then to 2.2 beta 9 and everything works pretty fast. Any hints on 2.3b and not receiving calls...thanks

I had this issue when I first installed, but it was because I did something dumb. I did a full backup with titanium backup before I flashed cognition (that's not the dumb part). Then after installing cognition I tried to restore both system settings and app settings. That's bad, don't do that. Restoring system settings from another android version causes bad things to happen like stuff stopping unexpectedly.

To fix I did a factory data reset on the phone and then just restored applications and app data only. So yea, I had to enter my gmail information manually but it wasn't that bad. I did not have to flash back to stock or anything like that.

I hope that helps.

there are a few issues with cognition that happen when you flash it, to try and fix it you can try flashing again but i havent had much luck with 2.3beta3. so i ended up going back to the 2.1 cognition which has been working very well, and im going to stay on it till he gets the new cognition running that has a newer froyo on it, not the one that came out a few weeks ago there is a brand new one

I'm getting outstanding battery life with 2.3b3 so far. I'll have to charge and use the phone a little more than I did from last night to today. ~19 hours and at 15%. That with checking a few Twitters, a little IMDB/surfing, full sync, installing a few apps, several email sessions throughout the day, etc.

I upgraded Cognition again the other day and still the battery life is still horrible. Angry Birds crashes. Bluetooth hangs pairing with my cars. My buttons don't work correctly. Sorry but this Cognition ROM is awful. I'm itching to flash to one of the faster ROMs but worried I might have even more problems.

You should flash back to stock and re-flash. Sounds like something got frazzled.

Question, since I dont have a captivate yet. Does flashing require reloading any apps already loaded if you are updating only?

non-OEM ROMs (like Cognition) will require to to reload/reinstall, or restore from a backup app (like Titanium Backup). The user data area (/sdcard) is not affected though if I have anything of value like camera pics/videos, I always copy them to my PC before doing anything.

COG 2.4! Holy Sheet. The changelog is substantial, tons of interesting improvements (the starting OEM ROM is interesting as well).

WOW! The new 2.4 is da bomb! Took me way too long to figure out how to get it rolling, but I've got it down now. Love the interface, the different fonts, the WiFi/BT/GPS on/off pulldown, the way the apps scroll is actually the way it should be for thumb searching (ergonomically correct), Haven't tried to evaluate the GPS yet. Overall, it seems solid. But, its only been installed on my Cap for about 12 hours. If you haven't done it, DONATE.

Way to go DG!

All the best,

RH

Been Running Cog 2.4.1 since about this time last night.. absolutely love it! The Dev did some amazing work i think. I will definately be donating when i get paid again. This ROM was a snap to get installed using clockwork ROM manager. I love the new interface of Cog 2.4.1 Keep up the great work Dev!!

Hi! I have just installed Cognition.v2.3b4 and so far so good!

One silly thing I have noticed...I have no live wallpapers...is that normal?

Thanks!!

I have looked over many, Many boards today and am left with an impression that I should be able to go to Cognition 2.3b4 with ODIN, but not a One Click ODIN.

I DLed Standalone ODIN and went to where the ROM file was downloadable. But when I go on in the process it is obvious I should be seeing a PIT.pit file and others to populate into the different areas of the ODIN interface... I can't find them in the download I have so far.

I have gone looking for these files or a zipped grouping of them, but no luck.

I think I am missing something simple in how this process should go.

Please help?

PS. I opted to NOT go with the ClockWorkMod route as it talks about only doing it if you have a previous version. The last time I did anything to the phone I did the leaked Froyo 2.2 ODIN One Touch. That leaves me unsure if I meet the minimum requirements for the ClockWorkMod option. (Plus I don't have root.)

Thanx in advance for the help.

Cognition 2.3 Beta4 IS NOT ODIN FLASHABLE. Unless designgears releases a ODIN version to use with the stand-alone, you are not going to have success trying to use the CWM file with ODIN.

You don't have to flash via CWM while you are on Cognition, that's a mis-understanding. Personally, I flash my phone back to stock (JH6), and then use CWM to flash to Cognition. I don't know what you mean by minimum requirements for CWM option either...you have a Captivate right?...it works right?...you can run ClockWorkMod Recovery on your phone.

Bottom line: At this time, 2.3 Beta4 CANNOT be flashed using ODIN.

Well, this is what confused me into thinking there was some sort of minimum requirement.

Caution: If you are running Cognition 6.X or below you must install using ODIN.

So, since I used ODIN to go to JI6, need I go back to a Master Clear state before using the CWM method? I see that on some boards it is recommended but I am not sure why. Just curious.

Thanx for all of the information!
