College wifi

I am still on the fence between getting the Captivate now or waiting to see if any other Android phones come out. But being able to connect to enterprise level wifi is a big thing and I remember early on there were people who had problems connecting to enterprise wifi networks. I haven't seen any mention of it recently, so will I be able to log on to my university wifi without problems?

i am able to connect where i go to school. i have to verify it each time i connect to it which is a pain but that is the way its set up. i have been to school with my little brother and was able to sign on where he goes and it automatically connects each time im at school with him.

short answer you shouldnt have any problem. but there always are different networks out there, i doubt you have any problem though
 
The issues with enterprise wifi hardware were different than the browser compatibility issues with some hotel and school "portal" hotspots.
 
Yeah my captivate works well with my college Wi-f here

but for some reason my xperia x10 doesn't connect to my schools wi-fi
so i stuck with edge and the occasional 3g
 
my captivate auto connects to my schools wifi with no problems at all, just had to enter my university login once when i discovered the network
 
I am having a similar issue...but whenever I put in my login info it tries to connect but is canceled because it doesn't trust the GoDaddy thing I guess our network uses.

Any ideas? Because it recognizes the network but it just won't grant access.
 
It doesn't work at my school PhantomZen. I pestered them with it like six or seven weeks ago, but it seems they never did anything about it.

Fortunately, I found that because I don't really download anything from the market anymore (I've pretty much got all the apps I need now), and I don't really surf the web on my phone (because I have a laptop), or anything like that that would take a lot of data, I've been able to manage staying under 200mb a month on 3G alone, all the time for the past 2 months.
 
At my work I wasn't able to connect until I upgraded to a Froyo ROM. I think the issue was a bug with how DHCP is handled on the stock eclair. If you have a network that uses a non-standard netmask (pretty common when you have multiple sub-nets) then the phone is supposed to get the netmask when it downloads its network credentials from DHCP. Instead it ignores the netmask and uses the standard one. You can get around this bug by using a static IP. So you get an IP using DHCP and then you change your config to static and use that IP address with the right netmask set. That could get me connected for a few minutes. Then I ran into the other bug.

There is also an issue with how WPA2 enterprise certificates are handled in eclair. I think the basic problem is that they expire after a few minutes and then you can't connect to the network anymore.

So for me the wireless networking was pretty worthless with Eclair. You might run into similar issues at your school depending on how they set their network up. The fix in this case is to root your phone and install a Froyo ROM where these bugs are fixed.

It sounds like lots of college networks are setup with simple password screens on open networks with default netmasks so the stock eclair should work.
