Hi everyone,

Passing along an update from the Gmail app team - we've identified an issue affecting devices running Android firmware version 2.1 and prior. Our engineers are working to resolve the issue as soon as possible. I don't have an estimate as to when at this time.

As I mentioned previously, you can access the mobile web version of Gmail in the meantime; just open up the Browser app and go to gmail.com.


I'll continue to share updates here as they become available.

Google evidently acknowledges the problem and is working on a fix.

Some tips:
1. do NOT do a factory reset, or clear your cache or messages, as none of this helps and will just waste tons of your time
2. if you change the range that your particular label (e.g. inbox) syncs over to a longer time frame, say a month, and then do a manual sync, it won't crash on the screen. basically it crashes when it tries to load emails that it's already synced so you need to set the range longer than the oldest message that you've looked at. this is a temp fix and won't fix the problem that new emails aren't autosynced.
3. you could open an imap account in mail to get notification of emails as they come in, but this will create imap draft/sent/trash in your gmail account (doubles of the regular labels).
 
If you guys don't have the patience to wait on Google such as myself, then go ahead and download GMAIL Backup here to backup all of your emails onto your comp hard drive. Then erase all of the emails from your account. Works like a charm
 
whew! glad i'm not the only one that can't access gmail all of a sudden...i thought i jacked something up on my phone until I saw this...
