Charge fully, then let drain low, maybe to 10-15%. Do that 2-3 times to calibrate everything. Avoid draining the battery completely if possible because it will shorten battery life.
I had mine charging while I had my first play with it
I also always let my battery discharge to the point where the phone turns itself off the first time I use it then occassionally thereafter. With modern batteries this has no effect on the battery itself (battery 'memory' is no longer an issue) however it may help the battery meter software calibrate.
I've never heard that this might affect the duration of the battery. That's not to say that crashdamage is wrong, just that I've done this with every phone I've had and I've never needed to replace a battery, even after 3 years of constant use.
