Root Community Development for Droid X

Let me preface my post by saying, as a long time BlackBerry user, the Droid X is the most amazing handheld device I've ever had the privilege of owning, and even in spite of the device's inherent flaws, I do believe that it is the best phone on the market today.

Immediately after purchasing my Droid X, I rooted it and began to explore what I could really do with the device, particularly in terms of customization. I tried every ROM I could get my hands on, and ultimately wasn't thrilled with any of them, not because they were of poor quality, but because most (not all) had bugs, compatibility issues or other small quirks. After a good deal of learning about the Android platform, I realized that what I truly wanted was the stock AOSP (Android Open Source Project) experience on my phone. While it is true that there a couple of ROMS strive to provide this type of experience, they still fall short (although, some just barely) of the mark.

This past week I switched my Droid X to ApeX 1.3 by Fab, and I have to say, it is just awesome. All the applications I need to run do so without fault, and the user interface is nearly spot on with regards to the true AOSP (Blur apps obviously excluded). If Fab can do such an incredible job of providing such quality software, just imagine how much better it could be with the community working as a cohesive 'one.' I have gathered that most ROM creators aren't in it for the profit, but rather for the purpose of making a really good device great. I've donated money to all those I felt were deserving (Fab included), and I have no problem paying for quality workmanship, but if a project like ApeX were to be opened up and worked on by the Droid X development community at large, I imagine that it's quality would only grow exponentially.

So my question to Droid X developers is, what are your thoughts on a opening up your projects and experimenting with the community development model? One of the founding premises of the AOSP was, and remains, the notion of openness and choice, and even Motorola has released the source code (although not all) for the Droid X. I believe that Droid X developers working together on 1, 2, 3 or any number of projects would only serve to benefit all Droid X users, and could really start a movement of open development for mobile platforms.

Thoughts/comments/conductive criticism highly welcome! Thanks to all the developers out there for making this great device so much better than it was when I took it out of the box.
