Compact QWERTY Keyboard Problem

I prefer using the Compact QWERTY keyboard while the phone is in portrait mode. I feel it's much easier to type on one-handed, and since I had a Pearl before my Eris, it seems a little faster.

My only problem is that during certain applications, such as Google Search, the input method is locked to ABC instead of XT9. I can't find any way to override this setting.

Anyone experienced this problem or found a way to fix it?

I have the same issue. My solution was to tilt the phone and use the landscape keyboard. It's not an absolute solution, but works faster than the ABC method.
