Complete Backup and/or rooting?

jgalak

I'm a complete newbie to Android, and am trying to see if there's any way to backup my phone. Unfortunately, I dropped it yesterday and the screen cracked. I'm getting a new one from the insurance people, but want to transfer my data.

What I'm concerned with are: Settings (screen layouts, etc.), apps (both paid and free), app data. AFAIK, contacts, calendars, etc. should just auto-sync with Google.

Ideally I'd like to just do a backup and restore so that the new phone looks and acts just like my old phone...

My understanding is that this can't be done with an un-rooted phone, is that correct?

If I was to root it, is there a procedure that works as of the most current patch that doesn't erase data?

Thanks,
Juliean.

Welcome to android, sucks that you dropped the phone but some of you stuff will still be there. The screen layouts will be lost, even with root when you flash a rom you have to set up the screens again. Paid apps will still be available for download as long as you use the same gmail account, free apps you may have to download again, some people will have their apps auto restore via the market but I can't seem to get that working for myself but I have several android devices. Any data on your SD is fine, some apps and games store data on the phone and that will be lost. You can choose to root and there is a method that does not lose data still in testing, it is more complicated than standard rooting but I can fish up the link if you request. If you were able to root without losing data you could then make a nandroid backup and then root the replacement phone and flash the nandroid backup and your phone would be identical to the way it was previously. Again the method for rooting without data loss is in testing and I would not advise you try it as your first root attempt, I just mentioned it because it is what you are requesting.
