Root Complete newbit to rooting

Hi all, im a complete newb to rooting and all that stuff. I have a captivate that i bought last summer, and im still running 2.1.

I recieved a text the other day from att about the new 2.2 update, but i couldnt find the page when i searched. Im wanting to root my phone, and flash a custom rom rather than going with att. Ive tried to download the one click method zip file, but all the ones i find seem to not work anymore. Is there something new out there to root the old 2.1?

Sorry for beating a dead horse, but im just now getting around to doing this and im not the most proficient computer whiz. If anyone could help me out or point me in the direction of some help, i would greatly appreciate it. Thanks.
 
That's what im in the process of doing now. I got kies mini, and i just did the step where you turn the phone off, hold volume buttons down and insert the cable, and the computer picked everything up. But my phone is still in downloading mode with the yellow triangle, it's been like this for over 5 minutes. Is there something else i have to do? Can i unplug my phone while still in the download screen? Thanks.
 
Ok, so I updated to 2.2 through kies mini yesterday. But I still want to at least root and flash a new rom. Does that video work for the updated 2.2? I'll be using a new computer with windows 7, I just have to get the drivers, correct? Thanks guys.
 
Ok, so i managed to get my phone rooted with super1click and it went smoothly. I have the superuser app. I downloaded titanium backup but it said it cant get the rights to the root, and it wont download busybox. Ive uninstalled and reinstalled TB, but still no fix. What do you guys think the problem is? Thanks.
 
Ok, so the phone is rooted, i got titanium backup and busybox to download, and i flashed it with clockworkmod, and i got cognition 4.2.2 transferred to my sd card. I try to flash it fro recovery, but when i click re-install packages, it says that it is unable to read. What do you guys think the problem is? Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks.
 
Ok, so I've figured out its the new 2.2 not allowing me to flash. I tried to input text line from xda forum into my terminal emulator, but I'm not quite sure how that all works. Are there any other ways to get the 3e signature fixed? I have it rooted, tb, busybox, cognition on the sd card, clockworkmod installed, and super manager app. Is there anything else I need? This is driving me insane, any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Try flashing back to stock using odin one-click. Then install cwm recovery and flash your rom with cwm
 
What about if i just wanted to flash a new kernel like speedmod or onix? I dont mind how the phone looks right now, i just want it faster, less lag and better battery/wifi. Is is the same process to flash a kernel, use odin to go back to 2.1 then flash from there? Is it easier/harder than a custom rom? Once i flash back with odin, will i have to root again? Thanks.
