Root Complete NOOB needs help rooting

Hey everyone....I'm completely new to the world of rooting.

I've read many threads on rooting my phone and followed the instructions exactly, but I keep getting the follow:

Error: failed to get root. Is your firmware too new?

I have the Incredible running the following (its stock):

Version: 2.3.4

Baseband: 2.15.10.07.07

Kernel: 2.6.35.13-g03546aa
htc-kernel@and18-2 #1

Build Number: 4.08.605.2 CL185897 release-keys

Software Number: 4.08.605.2

Any help on getting the phone rooted would be very much appreciated!!!!

I was running the exact same thing on my phone. Make sure to follow the directions CAREFULLY and download all the files you need from that thread and double check md5 hashes.

I am assuming you are getting that error while running unrevoked? Double check and make sure you are running unrevoked 3.22. Some users have ran into the error "failed to get root. Is your firmware too new?" while running 3.23.
 
Again, as in the other thead, that is only if you previously gained root and s-off! This method will not work if you don't have s-off.

What 7runx said was correct.
