Completly new to rooting, android, galaxys2 everything..

Hi i just recently switched from Blackberry to the galaxys2. I have NEVEr had a galaxy or even an android to begin with. All my friends say i need to root my phone but i dont even know what it means.

I have tried looking around on google researching but i am still lost, i want to root my device but what are the main benefits? Is it the free apps?* i have no problem paying for apps* what else can you do with rooting? Does it enable me to download new themes for my phone? Im kind of big on having a nice theme is rooting even required for this?

I have looked around and noticed rooting requires you to know what firmware your on and i dont really understand it because the baseband version throws me off.

My phones version is.
2.3.4
Baseband version: I9100UHKG4
Kernel Version: 2.6.35.7 -I9100UHKG7-CL417954 se.infra@SEP-50 #2

Would someone beable to also direct me to which page i can root my phone according to my versions?

Thanks for all the help.

Hello and welcome to android Forums xpersuasian!

Rooting allows you to install the latest firmware and custom ROM's and themes as well as giving you greater access and control over your phone.

The best place to post questions like this is in the "All Things Root" section of the forum for the Samsung Galaxy SII, here:-

Galaxy S2 (International) - All Things Root - Android Forums

This contains a "sticky" at the beginning which contains a wealth of knowledge on rooting and custom ROM's, here:-

http://androidforums.com/galaxy-s2-...-guide-updated-12-02pm-bst-oct-15-2011-a.html

The "sticky" has a step-by-step guide on rooting, here:-

[19.10.2011][CF-Root 4.4] KE*, KF*, KG1/2/3/5/6/7, KH1/3/4, KI2/3/4/8 - su+bb+CWM4 - xda-developers

Once rooted you can then browse some of the ROM's to see what you like.

Hope this helps. :D

okay i followed the step by step guide and i THINK my device is rooted. I now see a yellow triangle when it starts up which i know is normal? and i also see cwm and superuser in my applications, now what can i do with my devices?

first thing to do once rooted is install titanium backup. First app any rooted phone should have. This lets you back up all your apps.

Second thing is go into cwm and click backup, this will make a back up of your current phone state. Handy to have if anything goes wrong, means you can just restore that back up.

third thing is upto you, id look around at some of the other roms and/or themes and install some you like the look of or want to try but if youve not had the phone long you may want to get used to it first before you start flashing things onto it.

but def do the first two things

So i have rooted my device, and pretty sure i am running the villain rom. Now i see people with things like folders like on the iphone to keep icons organized, how do people do this? and how do i get themes for my phone, better yet where do i find em and how do i instal em, thanks.
