hi wondering if anyone can help

2 months ago i bought a note2 off gumtree for my partner. yesterday afternoon she could not make or receive calls or txts with an error message 'not registered to netwrok'

i instantly did a 'checkmend' report which says the phones been reported 'stolen'

as i have proof of purchase etc i contacted the police, who did a search using the imei number and said its not been reported stolen.

vodafone 'who the phone was purchased from via a contract' said their security team will tell me tomorrow if the phone has been reported stolen but said it shouldnt be as the owner would have to explain why my partners sim has been in the sim for over 2 months, which is on giffgaff.

the phone bizarrely lets her use the internet still, im confused now as iv read various articles about the phone pulling the 'wrong imei' number resulting in this error, but why would checkmend say its stolen and why would the police say its not reported stolen?

i really have no clue what the fault is and was wondering if you guys can help resolve this problem?

I bought a GS2 off ebay a couple of years ago which the seller said he had bought in Singapore. It was Rooted and was OK till a year later when I got an S3. I couldn't update it to the latest software and when I checked the IMEI it said it was something like a "Nokia C5" off about 2004. It turned out it had probably been lost or stolen and then "flashed" with the IMEI number off another phone. If your phone had been flashed with the number off a similar phone it might explain this?
