By pure luck I plugged the cable into the device while the Android OS was switching to offline mode (selected from the menu which appears when long-pressing the power button). That did the trick!

After some experiments I can veryfy using the transitions between offline and online mode to plug the cable into the PC is a workaround -- not a fix to the problem.

This Rodja guy is awesome. Android's USB notification menu now appears upon plugging my Incredible into my computer! Strangely, a factory reset did not work, but Airplane mode/Offline mode does the trick!

I am new to the world of Android and the cloud. Having just upgraded from (don't laugh) Palm Treo two days ago, I was having the same problem with PC connectivity. Uploading music to the SD card for my ringtones was one of the last steps in transferring everything from the old device. Anyway, the USB didn't work - however it wasn't anything fancy as some of you have had to deal with - I was initially using the Verizon charger cord. I switched to the USB/charger cord that came with the phone and it worked fine. Now all I need to do is figure out how to turn off the notification sounds for things like plugging the phone into the USB, or when my calendar is updated from the computer - that would be another discussion though. I hesitated to add this reply to the primary issue here since it may not be the root of the problem for most or all of you, but since I came across a simple solution in my case I thought it best to share it.

Ok, I had the same problem.
Just start at your phone's homepage>Settings>>Applications>>Development Then just uncheck "USB Debugging" Finally it will connect!

go to this site.....it helped a lot of people in your situation and mine. you need to download the driver ontu your computer.
this site will help you like it helped me.

This solution above worked for me. The Android update requires you update your driver. I do have old PDAnet drivers installed and they don't fix the issue. The new drivers from LG do.

Thank you. Thank you. Thank you.

I have emailed back and forth with Motorola tech support directly. Been on the Motorola site forums, etc. etc. This finally did it!

Thanks again!

This is how I got mine to show up. I first made sure that my sd card was in place in the phone. Then I pulled down the status bar and pressed the key for usb storage and made sure that was on. Then I went back to my computer, and on the start menu I opened devices andprinters and opened the smasung android device. I populated the device and it appeared both on the computer screen and recognized on the device.

all usb cords are not the same. my bionic will not recognize my old LG usb cable to allow the computer to be used. when i hook up the motorola cable which came with the phone, bingo it recognized the phone. strange. :stupido2:

This happened to me just today. I had no problems previously connecting. I was able to connect my gfs android phone to the computer using the same cables. I don't get the pop-up asking me if I want to use th phone for mass storage etc... There were a couple of attempts where it tried to install stuff and I got the failure message above. It was previously intalled and worked fine.
USB debugging was already off. I tried the workaround with the airplane mode which did not work.
I'm using 2.34 gingerbread.

I have the same problem, I use Incredible S. I am not able to see the usb options on the phone or on the pc. I tried factory reset, the phone support fellow asked me to try in safe mode, I tried airplane mode, nothing seems to work.
My SD card in some other device works fine, some other's SD card on my device is not recognized.

You may need to reformat the SD card. Put the SD card into a PC. Copy everything off the SD card. Format the card to FAT32 (don't use quick format). Copy everything back to the SD card.

I was having the same issue as all the above users and finally stumbled upon the following.

From your phone dial pad, put in the following for usb menu numbers:

Android 4.2 *#7284#
Android 4.3 *#0808#
Android 4.4 *#0808#

If it isn't already on MTP + ADB then change it and reboot your phone and reconnect the device.

Mine was on DM + MODEM + ADB and once I changed it to MTP + ADB, I was able to access the phone as a USB device.

Hoping that this helps all you folks out there.

For me, I had two issues. I didn't realize the old phone had an SD card, so the new one did not, and the "Disk Drive" option in default connection did not exist. I moved the SD card to the new phone and the "disk drive" option became available.

Apparently "disk drive" isn't an option without SD card. You can't browse internal storage.

The second option I've read about is the USB debug command. I don't know the definitive list of dependencies, but many programs require "Developer Options:USB Debugging" to be on for PC to device connectivity.

hope that helps someone. I've wasted 5 hours of my day trying to simply migrate my old data to the newer copy of the same phone. Was SUPPOSED to be faster than replacing the broken screen. If I'd known Android backups were so poorly thought out I'd replace the screen on the broken phone, not replace the whole phone.

I've got the exact same problem. Neither the phone nor the computer recognize each other, except to charge. I've tried every USB port, every cable, unplugging, rebooting, downloading various Sync versions, etc.

Don't know if this is a Froyo thing? Everything *used* to work fine!

Hi! about your problem on your device...
Maybe it's.. uhmmm ... unable to find software on your PC that can recognize your device. You can download and install PC Kies from- wait what is the brand of your phone? If it is Samsung, then you can download and install PC Kies from http://www.samsung.com/kies

Yeah, so the Droid Incredible is an HTC phone, and neither Samsung nor Kies applies here - so at this point, I think it's best if we just close this one. ;)
