Root confused about clockwork recovery and switching roms

I flashed clockwork recovery and the system said it went fine but whenever I use it to backup my current rom it reboots my phone after going to the moto logo for about 1 to 2 mins. I don't know if anything is backed up...

I want to install the new deodexed update but I read to backup my system first...I also want to try switching roms since i'm having trouble installing apps (keep getting error -18, no idea what that is)

...so, how can I see if clockwork backed up everything and if it didn't is there another way? I have titanium backup which works fine but is that enough? I am worried about bricking my droid...

help please

looked through a bunch of threads and redid clockwork then booted into recovery and did a nandroid backup so I'm guessing everything is backed up now... then i found the fix for the error 18... so i'm good with those issues, my question is can i now install the newest deodexed update or so i have to wipe my system and if I want to install a rom I need to wipe my system right?

Welcome to the forum,

As to installing ROMs, anytime you go from a ROM to a different developer you need to wipe your data and cache first. You can do this from the recovery or if your using ROM Manager to install the ROM you check off two tic boxes when it prompts you to do so. If your updating a ROM from the same developer such as CM6.1 to CM6.2 then generally you do not have to wipe data/cache. This off course changes when you going from Froyo to GB or back regardless of whether it is the same developer.

As for the newest deodexed ROM I am not sure which one you mean unless your talking about the stock ROM for 2.2.2. If you flashing a stock rooted ROM (2.2.2) over your current rooted ROM (2.2.1) you should be fine not wipe cache or data since they are the same type of ROM. Realize this though, if you keep a stock ROM on your phone it will replace your recovery with the stock recovery when you reboot. That means reflashing Clockwork Recovery anytime you want to make a back up. If you install a "custom" ROM then that will not happen. (Just something to be aware of.)

I hope this helps and please ask any question you might have if your not clear on something. Also good job on the backup.:) Always make a backup of you current working ROM before flashing anything whether it be a new ROM, new kernel, or theme. It saves you alot of trouble in the end.
 
yeah, i am still running stock I am just rooted. So basically put the deodexed update.zip on my sd card, boot into recovery and install it as normal? I want to install the latest update zip... will that keep my settings and apps where they r?

Also is that the same way to install a new kernel? my battery dies really quick so I am thinking changing kernels to a more efficient one would be better, but i don't know how...

Yes, that should work. If your using Clockwork Recovery, you will not need to rename it to update.zip. Just know where it is on your sd card and you can flash it regardless of the name (provided there are no spaces in the name). As long as you do not wipe data and cache your settings and apps will be the same. You should be fine if your new ROM is still stock.

As for the kernel, once you get your new ROM up and going and it is running smooth, make a back up, and then flash your new kernel. That way if you go into a bootloop you only have to restore your new ROM and not your old one which will then require the update. Also with a kernel you do not have to wipe data/cache.

one more question please, i'm lost... I put the deodexed update on my sd card... do I reflash clockwork recovery then boot into that or do I reboot into normal recovery? the deodexed file is on the sd card not in a folder.... usually when i install updates i rebooted into recovery and installed update.zip but this is different right? not sure how to get the new update frg83 i think into my phone...

tried rebooting into recovery from clockwork recovery after reflashing clockwork again and it did nothing but freeze to the moto logo then reboot normally... this is confusing

Try flashing clockwork recovery, then flash SPRecovery, and then flash clockwork recovery again. This should make it stick. Then reboot into recovery and flash your update.

it worked! thanks... my phone is running much smoother now...now to study roms and find the right one...
