They run off your smart phone. No added fees unless you purchase a special ap. It uses your phones Bluetooth.

The LG Urbane LTE will need a data plan ($5/month I think) because it has a SIM card. The G Watch R or regular Urbane do not.

I have the moto 360. Great watch. It uses bt as mentioned but it also uses wifi or with the upcoming update it will ( I believe it has it now but not 100% sure). Wifi feature works a such. If you are away from you phone (with a data connection or on a wifi connection) and your watch is on a wifi network (your watch gathers your wifi info from you phone and saves it) you will still get push notifications to your watch from your phone. Not all watches have wifi capabilities so if this is important to you then make sure you get a watch that can do this. Not so sure the G watch will get the wifi update and it appears be discontinued as of today.

I think I read that the Samsung Gear 2 watch needs a separate data plan as the watch needs to have a sim card in it.

The SAMSUNG GEAR S is the one that needs a data plan/SIM Card.

The other thing to watch. . Is that some Samsung watches will only work with Samsung phones...

They need your smartphone to be around. afaik it connects to the phone via bluetooth so it needs to be in vicinity. It's really handy to have one though.

I am not sure but if you are using a SIM on your smart watch it may could cost extra charge. If you are using via Bluetooth it won't charge extra cost.
