Root Confused on Root...

I've rooted my wife's Eris with "Eris Root for Dummies" and installed a froyo ROM. Understood the process.

My SF is not rooted, but I am planning on rooting when froyo ROM is released. I am confused with directions:

Install Drivers
Enable debug (understood) then connect phone to pc?
Download FascinateRoot_v2.zip
Extract to C:
Run Start_Root
Then is sounds like root is done?

I assume this part is equivalent to the gscript process to root Eris? Of course that part on Eris creates my recovery and i get in by vol up and power to create backup and flash roms

So what is next step for Fascinate?

How to I get into recovery for SF? create nand backup? install rom? etc?

Clockworkmod installation how to for windows / *nix - xda-developers
With the fascinate you will need to push CWM recovery using odin. Instructions are in the link above...there's a lot of good info in the root guide sticky. To get into recovery, you hold down both volume buttons while powering on.

So I need to do this AFTER root process above?

Samsung drivers should already be installed from root, correct?

"Put phone into download mode.
-Turn off phone
-Pull battery
-Press vol down button while plugging into computer
-Should show a yellow triangle
Open odin on pc
-Odin should show a yellow bar with a com port showing that it detects your phone
Click "PDA" button and select the CWMrecovery.tar you downloaded earlier
Click start

Do this all with battery out? Then after reboot, i need to download ROM Manager from Market?

"To use clockwork, you can reboot recovery and Rom Manager" I don't understand what this means.

or "cold boot into recovery (power off phone, power back on while holding both volume keys). If you cold boot into recovery you need to select apply update.zip and it will launch ClockworkMod. " Though it doesn't say to install update.zip on sdcard until after this section???

I'm so confused. Are there steps with visuals anywhere?

Then once in CW, you create nandbackup and flash ROMs?

Then once in CW, you create nandbackup and flash ROMs?

after you push cwr in odin....download rom manager and select "flash clockwork recovery" from the menu in rm. pick the fascinate...then do it again (sometimes it takes 2 attempts)....then click "reboot into recovery"...and it will automatically reboot the phone to recovery and select the apply update.zip for you...you are now in cwr.

to cold boot into cwr...do a 3 button recovery (both volume keys and power held down til the sammy splash screen comes up, then release) and navigate down to apply update.zip in (blue) stock recvoery...hit the home key to apply it...now you ll be in cwr.

***however if you are on the dl09 ota you need to make sure that you have a custom kernel on your sdcard to flash the first time you boot into cwr...otherwise stock recovery will overwrite cwr on the next boot****

To push CW in odin, i leave the battery out the entire time from when it says, "pull battery".

Also what is custom kernel as I am on stock dl09?

its certainly recommended to pull out the battery then putting the phone into d/l mode (hold volume down, plug in usb)...personally i always leave the battery in, so it will work either way i suppose.

a custom kernel is a one that is built to replace the stock one...some enhancements include code cleanup, voltage changes (for battery life), or overclocking capabilities.

a stock kernel is generally not ideal in comparison to custom ones

Voltage changes for battery life??? Which one is that and I'll read about it.
Which is for overclocking?

I'm assuming different kernels do different things? and you can only have 1 at a time?

Overclocked kernels say oc

low voltage kernels say either uv or lv. Also the imnuts are great undervolted kernels but they are standard clock

No, not necessarily 1 at a time. There are kernels that are undervolted and overclocked.

So to be sure i understand correctly:
I need to root using fascinatev2zip file and have phone connected from beginning?
Then I need to push CWR using Odin?
Download ROM manager and flash cwr if possible or cold boot if not?
You say "select apply update to apply zip file". Which zip file? Do I need to install a different zip file or is this already part of cwr?

Then I get in CWR. Create nandbackup first? and flash a kernel of choice since on dl09?
Then flash a rom?
The reboot? how?

Also are there any zips to flash that have a rom and kernel? I just flashed nonsensikal on Eris and it had both.

Wish I had visuals as I'm a visual learner.

The "update.zip" is a the CWR. Odin flashes a recovery onto it (Samsung recovery), which can't be used to flash ROMs.

So, before you Odin you phone, you need to have the update.zip and su file from this thread: http://androidforums.com/fascinate-...-rooting-fascinate-regardless-os-version.html on your SD card (So, before you Odin, copy those files to your card)

So, once the recovery is flashed via Odin, you select "Flash update.zip". It will flash, then you will be in CWR. Then you flash the su zip file. Voila! You are rooted at this point. Leave the update.zip on your card, so if you need to, you can get into CWR later with the three button salute.

PROTIP: The thread I linked to is the one I use. I got a bit confused at first with the update.zip; and making sure I left it on the card always.

Wow this sounds much more complicated then the Eris root and rom.

I am officially more confused than before and I don't think it is this difficult. Is there more than 1 method to root and people are responding different ways.
So the 1 click root is different than the link you sent?
Fascinateroot.zip appears to be 1 step. but then where is the odin, etc on that portion? How to Root - Android Forums
It sounds like your link is what is showing after running the 1 step root to install CWR.
Then at what point do i create nandbackup? flash rom? flash kernel? and how do I do these?

I'm really looking for the easiest way to root and install a rom and kernel.
