Root confused...please help!

Ok...I finally have some time to think about this again....:D ANd I need some help- in my last thread,I mentioned how I LOVE using my NC with a purchased sd card, love the kindle app with a passion! (dislike the the BN reader,as it costs way more) retrospectively I should have just gotten the straight up cheap kindle reader, but I have the NC right now.
On to the question(s) You all said my sd card would fail within a year, and I believe you.... In looking at the root threads,I see different options- one is from the sd card. What is this? Is this what I'm currently doing, running the android straight off the card, all the time? If not, what is the difference, what do I need to do?
I would like to 'root' this baby, but can I do it from the current card I'm using, without having to create my own first?
Confused is an understatement for me right now...
(though in reality,if the sd card I'm using fails,it's no biggie,as the only stuff I care about on there are my kindle books, which are stored in the cloud anyway at this point, and I can easily retreive them using another device)
What should I be doing here? considering what is important to me? I don't use much in the way of apps,is that the main benefit for rooting the NC?
I appreciate the expertise here......:o

There's 3 ways to install CM7 on your NC. You have CM7 installed on your sdcard, with the stock rom on your NC, completely different. :D

Also, there's rooting your NC (installing market on the stock B&N rom) and there's installing cm7 on your NC (replacing the stock rom with CM7). The guide assume replacing your stock rom with CM7.

Just want to be sure you know what you're asking for. :D

Unless you have a fondness for the B&N reader, there's no reason to keep the stock B&N rom, and you'll end up with a tablet, instead of a reader.

Since it sounds like you have the stock (not rooted) B&N software on your NC, the only method available to you would be to install via sdcard. (The other two guides assume you have rooted the stock rom or already have cm7 installed.)

This means:

  • you prepare a bootable sdcard and copy the rom and Google apps (market, gmail, etc... aka gApps) to the card
  • you turn off your NC and insert this card and power it on
  • your NC will boot into cwm recovery (on the sd card)
  • you erase your nc and flash both rom and gApps from cwm
  • remove the card and reboot
  • connect to your wifi and sign in with your Gmail account
  • open Market and start installing apps
