Connect portable hard drive directly to phone

I have a Toshiba 2 gb portable hard drive and a Moto G 5 g running Android 14. How do I connect them to each other without having to use a computer or other such device? Do I need an extra cable, my head examined, etc.?

Once I get these fabulous cables, how will I know how to use them? What plugs into what? I suppose when I do this a few times I'll be an old hand showing young whippersnappers the ropes.

What do you mean? Just find one ends that fits into the hard drive and the one end is usb that should fit into your pc.

I haven't yet. I have to get the cable. If this works, how will I have access to the files? I guess I'll still have to connect the drive to something in order to be able to use them because of course it doesn't have a screen.

Well, I took the plunge. I ordered that otg cord from ebay and I guess I'll get it in about a week. I sure hope it works. It cost almost $10.
