Help Connecting and Transferring Files to/fro PC - Why isn't it consistent?

What the hell? Why it that every time I want to transfer files to and from my computer, I have to follow the method shown here? On all other occasions when I try to connect my Intercept via USB, my PC complains about not recognizing it! What's the deal!

I am rarely able to connect to my Win7 64-bit laptop myself. I f-in hate that sh-t. I hear it has something to do with Samsung's lack of 64-bit Intercept drivers.

So I'm not the only one? Dang it. Would I have any connection problems if I were to plug my Intercept into a 32-bit version of Windows?

Probably not, once the driver's installed. It seems us 64-bit users, even with the driver installed, have to constantly either reboot the phone, the pc, or both, or reinstall drivers. At least that's how I get it to work, from reading various threads with posts from 64-bit users who all have our problem.

I had a real problem transferring files. More specifically, I could copy files from my (64-bit Win 7) desktop computer to the SD card, but not the other way around. Attempting to copy from SD to PC locked the desktop and required reboot.

I solved this problem by using the advice in another thread on here. I used a USB port on the back of the PC to attach the cable, not a USB port on the front. All transfers then worked like a charm.

Once you're done with file transfers, you do need to "eject" the SD drive from the PC with the "Safely Remove Hardware and Eject Media Tool" which in my case is in the "show Hidden Icons" popup in the taskbar.

Let me be clear that neither I nor Win 7 installed any driver on the PC. Not the Samsung driver or any other. The PC sees the SD card just like it would see any other removable drive.

My understanding from other threads is that the Samsung driver is only required for tethering.

If you're using a laptop, have you tried using every USB port on it?

Darkseas,

It actually installed a driver when you first plugged it in, in the class "Mass USB Storage Device". All USB devices function based on drivers. When tethering (ie USB debug mode is on) the Itercept is secondly installed as a Samsung under class "ADB Device Interface". So if you eject Mass USB, only your F drive unmounts, while it is still plugged in as an ADB device for tethering.

adaaaam,

I don't dispute that all USB devices require drivers to function. But I don't believe that a new driver was installed when I first plugged in the phone via USB cable. I believe that the phone is using an existing (probably Microsoft) driver.

But if you'd like to give me the filename for the driver you think was installed, I'll be glad to check and see if it's present.

The point here is that whatever drivers the phone is using, they seem to work fine on my Win 7 64-bit system.
