Connecting phone up to amp for music

Hi - I often hook the wifes ipod nano up to my Home cinema A/V receiver using an RCA(I think?) cable. It has one jack that goes into the headphone socket and 2 jacks that go into the amp.

I tried this quickly with my HTC desire but no sound came from the amp - just from the phones speaker!

It should just have the same headphone jack as an ipod nano so why didnt this work?

It should work. It should be a 3.5mm male mini-jack to 2x RCA male.

Do headphones work?

Its possible. The recess on the jack socket is renowned for causing a connection issue with many standard TRS (tip, ring, Sleave) connectors.
