Connecting to a file server

There seems to be a feature, I don't recall where at the moment, that appears to search for a file server. Is this correct? Is it it looking for a Windows/Samba server? CIFS?

Howdy!

A few of the better file management apps (Astro, ES) both have SMB capability (as well as FTP and being terrific tools for dozens of other tasks). I can hit up shares here on my local network, copy to/from music/photos/video/etc.

I don't recall seeing this feature OOTB, but it's pretty easy to add via a 3rd party app!

The "Files" app will connect to file servers on the same network.

I can get it to see the IP of a Windows Vista machine that is sharing file. It ask
me for a user name and password but says it can't connect.

Does anyone have this working?

I connect just fine with mine. Just use your computer account's user/pass. Might want to make sure you really have sharing turned on...
