Newbie
Basically I want to connect to the internet on my laptop but using my phone. I've tried the usb tethering but nothing happens, it shows on the internet symbol in the bottom right hand corner of the laptop that something is connected but when I try to go on a webpage it just comes up saying error, the page could have moved or whatever, even on Google. And when i use the phone through wifi hotspot, it comes up with full strength etc, but then as soon as i go on a webpage such as Google, the same error message comes up. help please!

You can get the Open Garden app for wireless tethering but I believe you have to be rooted to use it.

I'm not sure if you can use tethering for free if not rooted but maybe somebody more knowledgeable can clarify. Vodafone charge extra for wifi hotspot.

2.2 Froyo as WiFi Hotspot app

it makes your phone a wireless router. so uses your 3G connection and creates its own SSID so your laptop can see and connect to it as if it was using any wifi hotspot at home or out and about.

give that a try

On your PC go to Start> type
Code:
cmd
and press ok. In the black window type:

Code:
ping google.co.uk

And press enter.

If the response times out, theres no connection there. If it replies with 32 bytes of data, its simply your browser settings. Let me know.

It's come back with 'ping request could not find host google.co.uk please check the name and try again.

Would rooting help at all? I'm seriously considering it!

I've seen a problem reported before where the PC cannot reach a DNS server so cannot resolve any IP addresses.
Try pinging the Google.co.uk IP directly
Code:
ping 209.85.143.99
Does that work?

If so, then this is probably your problem.

A bit of Googling throws up this:
Issue 9499 - android - tethering and hotspot do not translate DNS correctly, have to manually set DNS on the PC - Android - An Open Handset Alliance Project - Google Project Hosting
Specifically, comment three.

If this is your problem, you could try and find out what the DNS servers are for your mobile operator, and manually configure your wireless settings to use those

Tried that but its come up with the 32 bytes of data, then does connection timed out..

What, you get a successful ping then it times out?

Odd.

Try
Code:
 ping -t 209.85.143.99

This will ping continually, rather than just 4 times, do you still get one ping, or is it intermittent?

You shouldn't have any problems with the default tethering app. Turn off your internet, turn it back on and make sure it's working before you try tethering. I have never had a problem like that.

And can someone explain to me how vodafone could charge extra for tethering? It seems to me that, whatever happens on my phone, is my business. If i'm using internet, then i'm using internet. If i'm using too much badnwidth, then they have the right to charge me for excess usage.
