Okay, here is my solution. Pretty simple to figure out after I went through all the comments here and the flashbulb went on!
My older phone Sony Ericson Xperia Neo V wasn't able to connect with a hidden WiFi even though it was just next to the router-modem (D-LINK DSL 2750U) whereas my GIONEE p4 phone easily connected to it every time. The only way to fix this was to make the connection from Invisible to Visible, but this wasn't a proper solution.
What worked for me was the simple method of changing the bandwidth of the wireless modem-router to 20M/40M instead of just 40M and voila, I am now using my WIFI in hidden mode on both devices with ease! Hope this helps any of you.
