Connecting to wireless shuts down 3g?

Sorry if this has been asked and answered but I searched and could not find a reply. I am new to Android OS and I noticed today that when I start my wireless connection on my EVO the 3G connection closes. When I disconnect wireless 3G starts. Is this normal or have I tripped a setting somewhere that causes this?

Thanks, didn't think I would need both I mostly just wanted to make sure I had not screwed something up because I had not noticed it earlier.

It's supposed to do that...Why would you connect to wifi and want to use 3g?
In order to set up a network even though there may not be an internet connection on that network. For example, lets say you want to use VLC remote for your laptop but you do not have internet because you do not need it.

Ok, I'm confused I guess but what would you need the 3g for? You just said you don't need internet so...?

Note, I know nothing about VLC so I'm just asking...

It's a huge battery saver, you certainly don't want the 3g radio trying to find a signal if you are connecting and surfing on WiFi.
