Based on the info we have now, does anyone have any insight as to whether or not we'd be able to connect a card reader to the Xoom, given that we used a micro-USB-to-female-2.0-USB adapter? Would the Xoom be able to read the external card in this fashion? I say this because I shoot photos with compactflash cards and while on trips I'd like to be able to back them up/view them on the tablet, without having to have a laptop or other computer access with me.

It will be highly doubtful, it's going to be like the micro USB on most phones that usually make the device itself into a "USB card reader itself". I highly doubt it will be a USB in the sense you are thinking much like printers do not accept "USB" input while being a USB device.

of the xoom can be configured as a host device then yes it can accept CF cards. ask the question over at the moto support forum...
If you are referring to the Motorola Owners' Forum, then I tried setting up an account there but since I do not currently own a Motorola product I could not sign up. Might you have been referring to a different forum??

There appears to be no USB host function, so only mass storage mode, MTP and tethering. Just like Android phones. Manual in the link.

Folks assuming there is USB host function will probably be a tad shocked on the 24th. "Lower end" tabs like the Gtablet have it, so I can understand the assumption. That said, Galaxy does not have it either.

Of course, in the plus side, several rooted phones, including the Droid and N1 have had mods done on them which have allowed USB host abilities. So if it can be done on a damn phone, I'm sure that very soon we'll see it done on the most high end tablet on the market.
Looks like you're linking to a thread that pertains to the user guide, though I'm not surprised that it isn't mentioned in there (I'm thinking that was an extremely watered down Verizon manual that just covers the basics).

Just a few days to find out, but seems the Xoom does not have the function. Be interesting to see how "locked down" the Xoom is. Will it be simple or a risky adventure for folks to root and mod that just spent about $900 (counting tax and one month data)?
Ah ha! THIS looks like an excellent clue that the Xoom will in fact be USB host ready!
I knew I had seen this listed when Moto first unveiled all of the Xoom accessories several weeks back. I actually already ordered the same type of cable adapter (micro-usb-to-female-2.0-usb) via eBay last week, so it looks like we'll be in luck! Actually would have shocked if this weren't the case.

Hey that's a nice find! I'm buying the Xoom now because of a trip I'm going on in a few weeks. I'll want to be able to xfer and view my pictures on the Xoom. (It's a trip specifically for picture taking of amazing gardens). This really makes my day.

I SERIOUSLY hope it works!Now FYI, what's interesting about this was that several weeks ago, when Moto first went live with their Xoom site which featured all the accessories, the site showed all of the accessories that we currently see (2 docks, portfolio case, and keyboard), plus this camera connector kit, and if I recall wall chargers and a car charger. However, at some point thereafter, those other items disappeared (though obviously you can still find their pages if you google them; in fact here's a link to the car charger which I just found). These accessories were also clearly mentioned in stories that broke on the web about Xoom accessories showing up in Verizon inventories a few weeks back.
So again, not sure why these other accessories, which are quite obviously Xoom-specific accessories, are no longer linked off the Xoom page but are very much still in existence. Either way, with regard to the USB host situation, I think its a very very good sign. I think we can all agree that Moto certainly wouldn't have made a page, with a very deliberate description, for an item that indicates a certain device capability if that capability did not exist (or had no basis for existance) in the first place.
