Help Connecting via bluetooth to Mac

That worked for all of 30 secs. Then it returns to paired but not connected.
Hi jcelko.
The solution is back at the page where you can see your device in the left hand pane. All you do is choose advance in the bottom of the full window and where you see serial port name and next column says type. It's where type is modem, you need to change this to rs-232. Carry out a test transfer from your phone to the mac and see what happens. I just carried out a test and all work well. Hope it does the same for you.

I was pulling my hair out trying to get a photo from my Nexus S to my Mac, it was so easy with my old Nokia E71, and thanks to your posts it now all works.

Waooo amazing ! a million thanks to Oniongirl l I do bow and even kowtow and bang my head on the ground ! ...Incredible how 1 year later all over the internet people with Apple Macs (at least the ones stuck with a PPC and thus with old systems 10.5.8, don't know about 10.6 or 10.7) are still lamenting about this weird and irritating Bluetooth problem and still try here and there to sell you various useless software and magic hacks for your phone to solve this (every cheap little phone with Bluetooth used to be/still is instantly "browsed" with ease right after the "set up Bluetooth device" and when you end up with a Smartphone with a superior OS such as Android 2.3.3 ...impossible to do the usual old "browse device" or even "send file" from your Mac). I even resorted myself to implement recently a ftp or webdav server on my phone in order to be able to browse my phone files and copy files onto my phone from my Mac -a bit heavy and sluggish solution- (best apps tested: Onair, Swiftftp, Andftp ...and also Mobile webdav -paying, but 30 days trial- to access my iDisk from my Android phone but that's another topic)..
This little Oniongirl trick should be written on the first page of the quick set up manual of every Android phone box !

A short reminder (thank also to Jodbr above):
on 10.5.8 in the System Preferences/Bluetooth, once your phone listed in the left column, bottom right "Advanced", then in "Serial Ports", in column "Type" change "modem" to "RS232". Then in the finder/(Bluetooth symbol)/(your_phone)/ ...you get at last the "browse device" ! Works like a charm !
... ah, I almost forgot, you need on your Android (for me here 2.3.3 on an Xperia Arc aka X12 aka LT15i) to make it work, to turn on an/the "Obex FTP server" app...

...by chance I had this good app Astro to check my files and had downloaded the sister app Astro Bluetooth which shows this "Obex FTP server" option as soon as you click on this latter app !

Not clear at all if this "Obex FTP server" is implemented with the 2.3.3 system on my phone but disabled or came with the Astro Bluetooth ? I understood vaguely that on other phones such as HTC it appears in the Settings/Wireless & networks/Bluetooth/advance settings/ ? ...but elsewhere on the net I have seen that the Obex FTP server function was also considered as a vulnerability on Android ...so it was disabled ...and possibly could only be activated only with some protections, such as limited access to SD card, authorization, etc. By consequence, indeed if this usual function is disabled on the Android phone, the Mac can't see it and thus can't list it in its phone services list -and precisely that's what it says during the Bluetooth device setup on your Mac !- and by consequence the Mac also turns on the wrong serial port type, etc. ...it seems at least a good story and explanation, even if not true -couldn't understand why when my usually smart Mac was mating with a so-called Smartphone -possibly brighter than an iPhone, hence the appeal for adultery-, both machines all the sudden became suddenly so stupid concerning this little Bluetooth thing ! ...Well, well, two humans with IQ>150 when by chance the fall in love with each other, aren't they after all often like that,
especially concerning small things (ooops, darling, forgot you could speak Chinese, or Hebrew, ...or Bluetooth !) ?-sorry guys, couldn't help it, but I am more a writer-poet than an IT geek !

Oooops ! after a few tests (transfers of files from my Mac to my phone, and also reimplementing and retesting my settings), not too sure that what is said in my little "reminder" just above is enough if your don't also do what Oniongirl says farther above... (thus, here is reminder 2):
on 10.5.8 in the System Preferences/Bluetooth, once your phone listed in the left column, bottom left "little cog", the "More info", then "Edit serial ports", then I have this new secondary "Serial Ports" window, attached to the previous window; if I click the little "+", an automatic name comes up "Xperiaarc-AASServer-i" (i = 1 and afterwards 2, etc.), protocole (I choose) "RS-232" and service, I have a choice of 2 things which I both chose (amongst a longer list) "AAS Sever" and "Astro-Bluetooth-FTP". No idea at all what this AAS Server" is... I have the vague feeling that only one of these 2 would probably be enough ?

it is my understanding that because Google and Apple are so against each other, they go out of their way to block and not allow us to connect via bluetooth to any Apple product if you have an android...

Any one know how to get around it...?

I don't know why but there is a default configuration that causes those kind of problems, what I did is just the follow steps:

in Mac:
Activate Bluetooth
Open Bluetooth Preference Panel (you can access it by clicking on the bluetooth icon in the top menu bar)
click on visible mode option
click the bottom part the button 'share configuration'
and finally allow to share files and bluetooth if it doesn't work.
now after Android configuration, you can click on explore devices.

in Android:
Allow the bluetooth
open Configuration section/wifi and bluetooth connections (I'm using both in spanish, so I don't know if those are the names in english mode)
go directly to bluetooth configuration
allow Visible mode
and that's all, now you can send your files to the mac and reverse.

there isn't extra software or application needed for share by bluetooth in mac and android.

OOOOOOH!! People with Macs, bow down to your new master! I've totally solved this problem.

So. On your Mac, go to the Bluetooth preferences panel after pairing your Nexus to the Mac.

Select the Nexus in the left-hand menu, then use the little cog to pull down a list of options. Select "Edit serial ports..."

Click the little '+' icon, and in the Port Settings section, select OBEX Object Push. Protocol should be automatically set to RS-232. Click "apply" (and probably "require pairing" to be nice n secure) et voila!!

You should now be able to, say, go into your gallery and send a file from your N1.
Thank you oniongirl. No one knew how to do it but you!It perfectly worked for me. I'm using a Samsung S3.
Thank you again.
