Connection problems

I live in Thomasville, GA. I purchased the HTC EVO V 4G from Radioshack. After the phone took 2.5 days to finally activate, everything was working just fine. Later that same evening while I was downloading some applications via the 3G network, the 3G connection dropped and I was no longer able to connect. I think the phone may have done an update as the PRL went from 61007 to 61008. I returned to Radioshack to see if they could get it working again, instead they replaced the phone with a new one thinking it was a hardware issue. After receiving the new phone (with PRL 61007), I was still not able to connect to the 3G network, not at all. Radioshack called Virgin Mobile and was told there is no manual programming for this phone, that it is all done over-the-air. So basically leaving me SOL. I did take the phone with me to Tallahassee, FL last weekend thinking a different sprint tower might help, but still nothing...

I've since downgraded to the Motorola Triumph. So far I've not had a connection problem with this phone on the 3G network or otherwise, although I have run into other quarks that are irritating me, but that's for another thread.

So just beware, if you are looking to purchase the HTC EVO V 4G on Virgin Mobile's network, I just hope you have better luck than me.

my guess is you may have been doing something wrong. the evo v has significantly better reception than the triumph. it isnt really a matter of discussion, the triumphs reception may be one of the worst ive seen in a very long time.
 
Lol the Triumph is a single band phone, only supporting the 1900 mHz frequency, whereas the EV4G is a quad band phone, supporting 800, 850, 1900 and 2500 mHz frequencies. Our phones will be able to benefit from Network Vision, if it'll be as good as they're letting us believe anyway.

After having read the controversy over whether or not the sprint branded phones are at all different from the vm branded phones, I decided to visit the virgin mobile/boost ONLY store (not sprint store/radioshack).

The phones I received from radioshack were both Sprint branded. Both guys at the VM/Boost store said YES, the firmware of the sprint branded phone is different than that of the vm branded phone.

Here's what else I noticed while I was there.. The guy had the HTC EVO V 4G via a Sprint contract which he was showing to me. Why is it his came with a kickstand on its back and the sprint-branded ones I got from ratshack didn't?...

So anyway, I am going to wait a week for them to get their shipment of the vm branded evo v 4g's and give that a shot.

The guy was showing you an evo 4g LTE from Sprint not the evo v 4g. The evo v = the evo 3d. The evo LTE replaced the evo 3d on Sprint so the evo 3d was passed down to us and renamed to the evo v 4g. It's sort of confusing but they are different phones.

And the software in the Sprint branded and virgin branded phones is the same. This had been confirmed multiple times.

Do not turn on the evo before you activate it. Make sure your old phone and your evo are both OFF and then make the swap online. Wait five minutes and then turn the evo on. It should activate fine.
 
going to stick with my original assessment. going to stop reading after the different firmware and the kickstand comments. i activate like 5 boost/vm phones a day. i never have any issues when i do it, and no one has ever come back saying their data has stopped working. it sounds like an erroneousness activation or user error. normally i dont care when people make these posts, but a thread titled "buyer beware" and then filled with an issue that a typical buyer does not have to worry about seems pretty misleading. i find most issues can be solved with 5 minutes of troubleshooting. i also have a hard time with you recommending someone take a triumph over an evo. what if someone were to see your post and actually take that advice? theyd be stuck with a phone that has

bad reception
poor screen
buggy capacitive buttons
shoddy build quality (bet youll have dust under your screen in under 1 week)
green blob camera
broken gps
worse sound quality
unresponsive touch screen

I said it was a DOWNGRADE! I just wanted a phone that works for the time being.. Never did I say I liked it! In fact it's a terrible phone...

All I'm saying is the phone/service OBVIOUSLY has issues, issues such as a web connection (a paid service) which cannot be accessed, must be addressed. I mean come-on, two identical phones, activated by two different people, having the same issue? What a coincidence..

Now, as I stated. I'm going to wait for the VM/Boost store to receive their shipment of Virgin Mobile branded HTC EVO V 4G's and if it works, I don't care if you activate 10,000 vm phones a day, there's obviously something different between the two branded evos. If it doesn't work, then I give up...

We saw a lot of issues at first, partly because Virgin wasn't ready for the influx and the rate they did this. This happens every time they release a popular phone, but in this case the whole process was rushed.

The OV had network issues due to the number of phones sold.
The Elite had issues with people trying to stay grandfathered.
The EVo V has issues because it piggybacks Sprint more than other Virgin phones, plus they were/are installing a server update and they rushed it into service.
I would pretty much bet that the early Iphone users are having a few issues as well and so will the first few One V users.


My bet is that you had a bad activation, either by you or the store, or just a Virgin glitch. It happens. Most people though, despite the few reports, are having good luck with them.

I see this constantly with my roms. Three people in a row chime in claiming something doesn't work and people panic. People with issues make the most noise. Yes, 3 people had a problem, but what about the 3000 others who didn't? Still think those 3 people indicate a problem? 3 out of 3000 is less than the failure rate of the device (by several multiples).

You are catching flack because you made a big deal out of YOUR problem. A singular problem. Which is not what people in general are seeing. Saying you had a problem is one thing, instead you came in with a thread title acting as if everyone would have your problem, possibly scaring others.
 
I have some of the SMS issues, but a fix will come out soon enough.

And yes. With the Network Vision upgrades... We should see some serious improvement. And it looks like I will be seeing it in a few days!!

You'd think Vegas would be there at the top of the list with it being a major city.
 
There is no problem here. Move along.

I had activation problems and couldn't use my phone for the 1st day *gasp* but I didn't blame the phone. I blame myself for expecting more for $35/mo unlimited (*) data and text. I am getting what I paid for. And now it works fine.

This sales person you talked to obviously didn't know what he was talking about...

I know I'm splitting hairs here, but the Evo is a dual band phone. The CDMA radio operates on the 800 and 1900 MHz bands. The 2.5-2.7 GHz capability is for WiMax (or 4G as Sprint calls it,) which is data only (you can't make calls on WiMax.) There is no 850 MHz on Sprint, but GSM carriers use it.

That said, you are right that the Evo gets better reception than the Triumph, which is indeed single band. :)
 
the poster is just warning consumers of potential issues, not sure why so many people are riled up. i bought the htc evo v also, and its a piece of junk. i dont care that it has a big screen, dual core, ICS, and 3D (ooohhh). i dont think its defective, its just poorly manufactured. compared to my old lg optimus v, the evo is more flimsy, less reliable with calls/texts, screen is not as colorful, voice calls are louder but have more static, camera photos are duller/grayish, youtube loads slower on 3G and buffers too much on 4G, and visual voicemail sucks. i cant really blame the network either because i no longer have any issues switching back to the lg phone

That's not entirely accurate.

At one time, Sprint phones were marketed as 800 MHz and 1900 MHz, but there is more to the story.

And it's not a small point. This phone can take advantage of the 1x Advanced services that will give more subscribers more capacity with greater range. (1x Advanced is part of Network Vision upgrade.)

I think it is time for everyone to agree that there are some issues, and stop blaming individuals for blowing things out of proportion when indeed it is obvious with this phone. In my case I bought my phone and had it activated by Radio Shack, everything went smooth and then started losing data and getting error messages when sending text messages. I called VM and after six rounds of troubleshooting and reactivating, the issue persisted. I went back and exchanged the phone (activated this one myself), the new phone was perfect for eight hours, then it was losing data and giving me errors when sending messages, exactly like the first one! Both of these phones were Sprint branded. I finally went back and returned the phone for a refund went to Best Buy and picked up a non-Sprint branded Evo. This time I activated it with a brand new account and a new number. Everything went perfect, I was using the phone in minutes...about an hour later, the data drops and text error started happening, 4 hours of tech support and troubleshooting did not resolve anything. Today I'm returning this phone for good.
I know there are people who have no issues at all and I'm glad, but for me and a lot more others, there are big unsolved issues with this phone and potential buyers should be made aware in case they do run into this issue.
 
You and some others OBVIOUSLY have issues, but not all by any stretch.

Ok. Time to eat my word. I just ran into the "radio interference error" thing.:mad: I just happened to see my signal bar go from partial to empty to full within few seconds so decided to take a look at the signal strength and it was at -120 dBm with full signal bars. Obviously, it was misreporting the signal strength. So I tested sending text and receiving phone calls, which then gave me that error code. I was able to resolve the issue by turning off the wifi and that helped the signal strength increase to -80 dBm immediately. Since then I've restarted the device for safe measures, but I have to say it is concerning.
 
Try Open Signal Maps, free in the Play Store, and see if your phone is tower hopping for a signal or what's going on.

Could prove helpful for trouble shooting.

On Sprint, best connectivity comes by updating PRL then Profile in that order. Don't know if that applies to you cats or not, sorry.
 
This phone can take advantage of the 1x Advanced services that will give more subscribers more capacity with greater range.

According to HTC, the Evo V 4G is not directly compatible with 1x Advanced. The Evo V 4G is only compatible with CDMA2000 1xRTT, EVDO rev. 0, EVDO rev. A and 4G WIMAX. [HTC Specs]

1x Advanced is backwards compatible with regular 1xRTT devices, and better for all users when you look at the network as a whole, but to take full advantage of the 1x Advanced base station upgrade the handset must also be specifically compatible with 1x-Advanced.
