Connection socket on handset

I am awfully confused as to what the connection socket actually is on my Desire.

It is claimed to have a HDMI connection. Some things I have read including on this forum refers to the USB and even micro USB connection.

The cable that came with the phone is a micro something on one end and a standard USB "A" on the other. The micro end definitely is not USB and at the same time is very much in appearance to a micro HDMI, yet its dimensions do not correspond to the type C - 10.42mm and the type D - 6.4mm.

Is the socket and therefore cables as well unique to HTC as so many other phone manufacturers have done over the years?

I want to buy a spare one or two to have in my cars for charging purposes.

Could somebody please lead me out of the darkness of the myriads of cables that we have attacking us from drawers, walls and appliances in our modern world.

It was not tool long ago the only cables were power cords and if you could afford one, a TV aerial cable.

With regard to buying cables i have got a couple of cheapies from e-bay. one will just charge when connected to PC other one will do data as well, also have an old micro to usb from my blackberry works fine for charging & data,
 
Worked it out last night.

My daughter has just got a new Nokia X5 an it has the same connection. On the cable plug it has the USB logo and a B.

I went to Google and did some research and found out that there are more USB connectios than flies on a dead wombat.

The connction is a micro USB "B".

That solves this mystery for me and hopefully others who were born in the olden days, BC, (Before Computers).
