Help Connectivity problem

I have an oddball connectivity issue. It may have been covered before but every search term I can think of throws up thousands of posts about wifi connectivity issues that don't seem to be the same as mine... so here goes
When my phone has to connect to the internet for any reason (sync accounts, fetch email, browse, etc.), frequently it will just hang. Hitting "back" and then trying again will sometimes solve the problem, sometimes it takes several attempts, sometimes it just refuses to work at all.
The behaviour is the same in all sorts of circumstances.... the phone will behave as if it has lost internet connection but the wifi indicator will look fine and other apps and functions will work normally.
For example, I hit the Market icon.... it launches but then hangs as if it can't connect to the network. If I leave it alone it will sit like that forever or tell me there was a network error, but if I hit the back button and try again it will often work straight away. If it doesn't, I can go straight to "Internet" and it will work perfectly!
This seems to be mainly a wifi issue but happens regardless of which network I'm connected to (Home, Work, Hotspots, etc.) I haven't noticed it during 3G operation but then again I very rarely do anything that requires internet access when I'm not connected via wifi....
The phone isn't rooted but if there is anything anyone can suggest, please let me know.....

I suspect the wifi connection is buggy and that it loses connection intermittently or just happens to be very slow. A bit like surfing with the PC and sometimes needing to refresh the browser when it gets stuck. The moving back and reloading the page is probably like the refreshing.

I guess the question then is whether or not it's likely to be a hardware issue?

If so I can send the phone back for a replacement but I'd rather not if its just a settings or software problem....

Now that I'm specifically looking for this problem its getting more and more annoying. It's only happening on wifi as far as I can tell but affects every phone function that requires network access to a greater or lesser degree...

I was considering waiting for ICS to see if that improved things, but unless there are any specific wifi mods I don't see how it can.

Seriously considering sending the phone back for replacement but not sure how to report the problem to Virgin.... Their customer service department are fine if your problem is on their script but if you're bringing them something new they don't seem to know how to handle it..... :(
