cons of this phone?

I'm trying to decide what verizon phone I want and I was thinking maybe this one. On the cnet review they say,
"GPS positioning isn't always accurate. For now, you can't save apps to an SD card or voice dial over Bluetooth. Search is locked to Bing."
Is this still true? Thanks. Any recommendations on a phone would be great too.

all these things can be fixed if you don't mind rooting, flashing roms and kernels. If you don't want to do any of these things, maybe its not for you.

Well I would like to do these things If I had the slightest idea how. It seems like you have to read a book to understand it.

It seems a little overwhelming at first, but it is pretty easy after you get the core things down. There is tons of support on these forums too, just ask and you will get an answer fairly quickly.

This is the best phone/carrier combo IF you are willing to put the time in. If you're not a geek, it's ok, I'd wait for the iphone on Verizon if you just want something that works. It's ok to have other interests in life besides hacking phones.

For most people it is unless your name is PunkKaos, birdman, jt1134 or adrynalyne then you are mandated to have no life outside of developing for the SF, at least till we get stable builds :D

Hey I'll admit I was keeping up with af during the jets-pats game in between giving nit hell on twitter, so I think I may be an addict :o

imo the fascinate is amazing, i have not really notice any gps problems since i've gotten the phone 3 months ago. The only problem i can think of is no 2.2+. The screen, speed and camera quality is amazing.

The phone, IMHO is a bit...Meh. This was my first smart phone, and although it is a big step up from the little LG dare I had, it is hard for me to recommend this phone unless you plan to root. Now, I am not a TOTAL geek, I do know how to get around files and change what-nots better than the casual smart phone user. I have been VERY skeptical about rooting as it is a big deal (At least in my mind) and if something goes wrong, you could brick it (Although ive heard its very easy to reverse).

So anywho, I decided to root a few days ago (After reading A HELL of a lot and asking LOTS of questions) and it is very cool. I have only loaded a few minor settings (a fix for the lagginess, some little visual mods and wifi tether) but it runs a hell of a lot smoother and feels like a true smartphone should. I plan on doing more rootness with the device, but for now Im just working with what I got.

Now after that is all said and done, I dont plan on buying another Samsung Smartphone. The number one reason is the HORRIBLE lack of backing. The Android OS that is installed on the device is at 2.1 and runs significantly slower and less consistantly than what is installed on 3/4 of the devices released at the same date and even a few months BEFORE. Now samsung claims that it will be updated...but for now im a bit skeptical. Honestly this would be a non issue if I actually felt like samsung was getting its act together and actually working on it rather than releasing even MORE products.

The other big reason was the GPS. It was VERY hit or miss with it sometimes locking on in 30 seconds, and for me upto 20 minutes just to find somewhere a mere hour away. Although that has now been fixed with the most recent update that Verizon released.

And the only other REAL con that I can think of is the Bing related stuff and bloat ware. Essentially the device comes with bing loaded into the search soft key as well as the default search engine, and right now, it can't be changed. Now its not that big of a deal for me. I just up the browser button right into my dock, set my home page to google, and im satisfied. And bloat ware is just verizon's crappy apps they pre install into the device and cant be removed. They are more annoying rather than actually a con. They just take up space in the app drawer. But again, its not that big of a deal.

Personally I believe the Fascinate has a great POTENTIAL for being one kick ass phone stock, but in its state that it is right now...I say its a little more than passable and there is definatly better options out there, especially with the Iphone right around the corner. Now all these issues can be fixed with a Root but its really up to you if you want to take the plunge. Just keep in mind, it does take some reading and asking of questions to understand even 1/4 of it...but it absolutly makes the phone a lot more stable.

As for me, im keeping it until my contract is up in september or something AMAZING comes along. Im stoked about some new HTC phone coming out (I think HTC makes the best stock phones out there right now) but I kind of want to avoid the 4G phones. I have a feeling they are NOT going to be as cheap as 3G. I just hope they continue supporting and making 3G phones through at least september. Anyway...hope that helps!

Thanks man. It helped. I just can't think of a better verizon phone right now. I sort of dislike apple products so that's why I don't want to wait for the iphone and also if I did I wouldn't get this discount of 10 bucks less a month they have right now. I've pretty much narrowed down my search to this phone. Now to only understand rooting... and removing the bloatware / bing search stuff.

Oh no problem. Well if you feel really confident in doing this rooting, then I say go for it :D. Now ill direct you here where you can kind of read up on how to do certain things. I also found this article to be pretty helpful in making my descion to root. Also make sure you ask LOTS of questions. Im still trying to understand everything so asking me probably wouldn't be the best idea. You can head over to the Fascinate root forums and get some answers that way and you can always check out the fascinate lounge and introduce yourself and ask questions there. All of us fascinaters (wow that sounded dorky) are really chill people.

Well good luck with everything and hope to see you around more :D

Do you need to buy right now? There are 4 LTE phones set for release in the next few months; why not wait for those? Just my $0.02.

With that said, I will no longer be signing 2-year contracts with Verizon, as they did away with the primary account annual upgrade. Due to this I recently purchased a used Fascinate from ebay to tide me over until my contract is up in July. At that time I'll purchase the latest and greatest LTE dual core phone, but between now and then the Fascinate will more than satisfy my needs.

a lot still remains to be seen with the lte phones...pricing has yet to be announced for the phones themselves...pricing for lte smarthphone plans has yet to be announced..and if data will be capped...and if your not in an lte area then you ll loose part of the appeal of it

it wouldnt be a bad idea to hold out and find out the answers to these things rather than tie yourself into a new contract...so the ebay route was smart :)

personally none of the verizon lte phones look worth spending my money on...the sammy is essentially an ugly lte version of our phone...the thunderbolt a retreaded desire hd...and the bionic (my thoughts on the insidious policies of motorola aside) is the worst of the 2 4g moto phones launching (atrix kicks it in the head)

Really? The Thunderbolt looks intense. Its essentially a Verizon verison of the Evo...and that phone is damn near perfect for me.

so thats fine for many people i suppose...and if you wanted an evo or bigger incredible the whole time (many did) then it ll sell well

personally im not planning on spending $300 on a 1 yr contract for (at that point) a 7-9 month old phone with bad battery life

a galaxy s 2 (with current os) or another htc monster would get me too :)

Oh ok I hear that. After my experiance with the Fascinate, Im going to steer clear of samsung and stick to what feels better. Personally Im not ready to jump on 4G anyway. Its a cool idea but since my area wont even have LTE for a while, I dont see the point in paying even MORE for my monthly payments and having a cap. And honestly, im VERY content with 3G. Sure its not as fast as it could be, but it is still VERY good. I just hope the manfactures continue to make decent phones for a little while more. Im REALLY hoping the Incredible isnt the last premium 3G phone that HTC makes for Verizon.

That last sentence says it all. The providers are going to force us to move to 4g by only making the big name phones 4g. Well I guess that isn't forcing but if you want a nice upgraded phone

Yeah thats what im afraid of. Honestly if I could simply have a 3G Evo, I would be more than happy to play a little extra up front, but like I said, If I barely get 4G, why the hell would I pay extra and recieve less (No 4G and a cap)? Personally I think its rediculous. If they continue making "high end" 3G phones for the next 6 months, then I will be happy. If they drop 3G completly, im NOT going to be happy.

I hear ya loud and clear where I live I bet we won't see true 4g for at least a year or more

Isn't another con of this phone that you don't get full features from Google Voice Actions? Doesn't that only run on 2.2? How would you fix that via root, flash...

I understand you can search and whatnot with your voice, but you can't "Send Text Messages" or "Email so and so" right?

edit:nvm i read wrong =(

ya new search bar is 2.2 only.

Just an FYI, in little Rochester, NY we have 4G coverage.

I thought it would only be the big cities but apparently they go by the percentage of Verizon's market share.

In Rochester it is something like 89% of all cell phone coverage. So we have 4G.
