Root Considering GOT 2.2.1 - advice?

Mopr

Newbie
Hey all! I'm bored of waiting for Motorola to give us FroYo and I'm thinking of upgrading to GOT 2.2.1 beta. I found the "2.1 update and root guide" and it seems straightforward enough (though a little out of date) but I have a few questions before I start anything:

1. What do I lose in the process? At the moment I have root (used Universal Androot from the market), have overclocked to 900MHz (using Milestone Overclock, also market) and I recently started using LauncherPro. Will I lose root and the higher clockspeed on flashing GOT 2.2.1?

2. Will I lose any settings, apps, preferences etc? Or is GOT 2.2.1 effectively a "service" sbf?

3. As you can see my root/overclock tweaks are all one-click app solutions so I have no experience at all of more complex root/overclock procedures. Does anyone know if the apps mentioned above above work with GOT 2.2.1?

4. How "beta" is GOT 2.2.1 beta? Are there stability issues or problems worth avoiding the ROM over?

Please help a slightly nervous Android newbie upgrade from the ancient 2.1!

Hey,
I was going through the same issue up until last week and took the plunge.
My Thoughts about GOT2.2.1
- Apart from Apps2SD ( HUGE +++ ), there is no significant difference with speed. I OC'ed my GOT2.2.1 using Milestone Overclock app. I still use Launcher Pro which i love. Flash works - But then again, with Skyfire in 2.1 all the flash videos worked anyway.
- As for stability, all the apps/games i have installed so far seems to work fine (no significant difference in speed) I had couple of FC with google maps - but after a reboot that started working fine.
- so its up to you, GOT2.2.1 works - Apps2SD is GREAT. no other difference.

You lose everything. Use Titanium Backup to backup your applications if you do not want to bother with downloading them from the Market. You can also use Listables to save a list of all your apps and easily find them in the market from the HTML file it saves as.

Not sure if Androot will work on 2.2.1 but z4root will. The same with Milestone Overclock to overclock the phone. You will also have to do some stuff with GOT open recovery and there you can set the overclock permanently without using the app. You can root the phone from there too. Red the whole procedure thoroughly as it requires applying fixes from within open recovery and you have to do them and can root and overclock while you are in open recovery.[/quote]

See above.

IMO it is not beta at all.

No reason to be nervous. Going to 2.2.1 was my first time playing with a non-stock ROM and I was fine. Just make sure you read the GOT blog and instruction for this and also make sure you asve your android id to restore it later. Everything is there.

IMHO, I wouldn't do G.O.T 2.2.1, it's buggy as hell and slower than the previous G.O.T release, 1.04(?) anyway... I ran it for almost a month and I hated it. I finally put on Cyanogenmod 6.1.2 for milestone, much better, much faster, battery life is MUCH better, only thing I can't get working on CM is the new market. o-well.

Buggy? I used it for a few months and never experienced a reboot, freeze or anything that would imply bugginess. I made sure though, that I applied all fixes provided in open recovery.

If you are only posting this because you want to advertise CM, get lost!

lol Szadzik... There is more then one fix in the new open recovery? I had a few problems especially with battery draining really fast. So I would flash 3.10, then 3.11, and then GOT 2.2.1. Then reboot and apply the 2.2.1 fix in open recovery. What else am I missing? Maybe this is why it wasn't working out for me?

When I first flashed GOT 2.2.1 I use OR 1.10 AFAIR and then was flashing it again and used 2.0 AFAIR and I noticed that these reciveries were different and so the second time I flashed the ROM, use OR 1.10 and applied whatever fxes it offered and then used 2.0 and again applied fixes. I have to say I was not experiencing any bugs in that ROM and was perfectly happy with it.

As for battery life - everyone reported it was worse than on stock ROM.

What does IMHO mean? apparently that went over your head...

bad language removed.

I guess I did something wrong before, as now its running flawlessly and the battery life is way better then before. Kinda nice to be on 2.2 again and of course Murphy's law it will come out for Telus now haha :p

P.S. Sounds like someone needs anger management counseling :p

Good to hear it is running better for you now.

P.S. Enojying my MS2 every day. A really great upgrade.

ive switched over for a week now. its running pretty smooth, but the battery life is horrible. absolutely horrible. i get around half a day of battery life. i lose more than 10% EACH HOUR while its on STANDBY.

aside from that. its great =D

Must be some app runnning all the time. I have had it for some time and never had such high power consumption on standby.

Ya that's the battery life I had when I tried it frist. After clearing off everything and then flashing like I said it started working fine. I don't know if all the steps were needed but it works now! yay! :D

1) Factory reset
2) Clear all caches in recovery
3) Flash 3.10
4) Flash 3.11
5) Flash G.O.T. 2.2.1
6) Apply Fix in recovery

I'm thinking something was still in there from before causing problems. I am now not using any of my Titanium backups either. I went to the market and downloaded new versions.

PS Nice ya I looked at getting a unlocked one online but it was 650 :| I decided to wait a bit and I'm glad I did! Found a boxing week sale for a 50' plasma true slim wall screen tv lol $598! I couldn't pass it up :D

Does your MS2 have video out?

No video out.

Thank you for the feedback, everyone! Surprised to hear about a lack of speed boost though; isn't 2.2 supposed to offer quite large performance gains over 2.1? Or have I pretty much negated those by overclocking and installing launcherpro now?

Really if I don't stand to gain much from the process I might just skip it, especially if I have to lose all my customisations (however temporarily) along the way and have to apply lots of fixes etc.

i wouldnt say theres no speed boost. Using the stock rom, my phone lagged all the time, and i found it unuseable without overclocking it to 800mhz or more. but with GOT, i havent overclocked my phone yet and i found that its running smoother.

part of it might be because ive saved most of the apps on sd instead of on phone, i guess. but definitely a lot smoother for me, in my experience.

First of all 2.2 is much better for Milestone because it manages running apps much better. In 2.1 I used to have all my apps running all the time in the background and slow the phone down. 2.2 on the other hand manages apps much better and there are usuallu just a few of them running in the background.

Also, 2.2 lets you move apps to sd card which is IMO a big plus.

Well, just to follow up on this for anyone else considering taking the plunge: I flashed GOT 2.2.1 at the weekend and am so glad I did!

I followed the "2.1 update & root guide" on this forum but honestly, it's quite outdated now and only needs two or three steps, tops. All I actually did was backup all my installed apps using Astro Pro (love that app), downloaded and installed RSD Lite on my computer and downloaded my chosen 2.2.1 sbf from the and-developers site.

Started my milestone in "bootloader mode", plugged it in, followed the instructions for RSD Lite and about 10 minutes later my phone was booting in to FroYo ready for all my apps to be reinstalled.

If you're on the fence about this one, don't be! Moto's gonna take forever to release FroYo officially and doing it yourself is even easier than the step by step guide here makes it look :)

try CyanogenMod 6.12 for Milestone...

it's much better & stable than G.O.T. :D
