Root Considering rooting...

kross

Newbie
Helllo board. I am new to these forums in case you can't tell, and I am considering rooting my Droid X. I have a few questions however. I guess my biggest concern is what if I mess up, how easy is it to fix? Also I was considering using the"easy root" app, does anyone know the success rate with this method? Some of my other concerns are also what happens if I break/ drop/ etc. my device and I have to take it in to get a replacement, will verizon still repair/ replace it even if it's rooted? And does anyone know if a rooted x will be able to download the OTA update for Froyo? Finally, my last question is it really worth the risk for me to root, cosidering wireless tether is of little use to me.

Thanks for your time, and I apologize for my noobiness. Long live the X!

Well it's pretty easy to fix now that we have the ability to recover bricked phones. The easy-root app is what I used, it was very easy to root and unroot and root again with.
Didn't have a problem any of the times I used it.
If you break/drop it, that isn't software related it. If you brick it you can recover it.

The rooted x will download the OTA update, because it isn't a custom rom with the update disabled.

There's a lot of stuff to use root with. There's a thread in this subforum that tells you all the popular root-only apps. I use it mainly for tethering and the titanium backup app because I have sooo many free apps downloaded that it would be a pain to find them all if the phone ever loses them in an update or crash.

Edit: Would serve best if you search for questions before asking them, I know most of this has been said 10,000 times.

I personally used the EasyRoot app.

I rooted my Droid 1 with an update.zip and could do it again, but I'm scared to death of bricking my beloved phone so I took the easy way out.

No problem and it gives you shortcuts to some favorite root apps like drocap2.

Thanks for the responses. I just realized I am an idiot, and that the title of the thread should be "Considering Rooting", not whatever I have instead.

I have been lurking this board for a few days now, but I haven't found the exact answers to my questions, so that's why I posted a thread about it.

Haha well I answered partially because of that title, I figured you weren't a native English speaker so I skimmed over your post (not really looking to see if it was well-structured or not) and then replied. Hope we answered about everything you needed to know. (:

Yeah, I think I understand it a bit better now. I'm considering rooting later tonight. From what I have been reading, as long as I don't go crazy deleting files and what not I should be okay.

I have another question :-p I've noticed that a lot of people are able to get rid of that ugly gray notification bar and make it black or some other color. Is this some kind of app that you can download after root that allows you to change the themes/ color of things?

No follow one of Fabolous's guides to either Nextheme or REVOlution

Well, I just took the plunge and all I can say is that was easy, lol. So far, so good. I just installed Wireless Tether, Dro Cap 2, and Titanium Backup. Anybody have any advice on what else I should check out/ download?

I used revo theme. I love the look. Remember to take the phone off mass storage mode when running the commands. Use adb to push the files or if you transfer in mass storage mode change it to charge only afterwards before running the commands. If you don't it won't be able to find the files needed.

What do you do if you need to bring it in for warranty, etc...can't you de-root the phone without Verizon knowing what you have done?

I come from the Omnia which I had hacked and cracked and the original file to revert to should anything go terribly bad...
