Help Constant Driving Mode pop ups and crashes

Hi guys,

My phone has been crystal clear and running perfectly until about 6 hours ago today.

I took a photo and wanted to get it on my PC so i plugged it in via the stock USB cable and noticed that the phone just bleeped to say it's charging but it did not bleep to show that it is connected as a media device, which it is set to do so by default. I tried a different port. Still nothing.

I restarted the phone. Now it works. 10 mins later i see these driving mode pop ups all the time and it keeps causing crashes and freezes.

I checked online and people are saying that it could be the micro USB port on the phone that is dodgy. Anyway so far i have flashed my phone to a different JB (the carrier stock JB for my phone instead of unbranded JB).

All appeared fine for about 2 hours. I disabled some apps with root app delete. i watched some youtube. i played a game. all was great, problem was gone. After 2 hours it started again. As soon as it started though i blew very hard into the micro USB port and it stopped, but then it came back again.

Is it worth me clearing cache and wiping back to factory or is this really a hardware problem and is my phone broken? I can't see what on earth has caused this. i treat the phone carefully everyday, never dropped it, i just don't get it.

There are times now when i plug in the charger and the phone does nothing, does not even recognise the charger is plugged in. Same goes for plugging into the PC. Then a restart of the phone lets it charge again. Before i did the flash i plugged in the charger and wiggled the cable around a bit and it just went crazy with hundreds of driving mode pop ups and freezes. After the flash i tried the same thing and it didnt do anything so i assumed all was fixed.

Can this really be hardware? The signs show it is software related, since i flashed the firmware and it just worked fine for 2 hours. i wiggled the cable around after and it didnt do the same symptoms.

is anyone here NOT on JB and has this problem? Come on if every single GS2 out there with this problem is on jelly bean then it has to be software related, how does a phone's micro USB just magically decide to go ape shit?

Man, I don't know what the cause of the problem is, but I had it too.

Just started out of the blue and was driving me mad. I tried everything, no cigar.

However I had a need to change my battery. New battery, no problem.

Don't ask me why! Try that.

Good luck.

hmmm. the only way i`ll do that is get the larger battery for it with the back casing to fit it as a little upgrade.

the very odd thing is though, just now as the battery has drained to nearly empty i plugged in the charger and it bleeped and accepted it. for the sake of testing i removed the charger and put it back in. Nothing. No charge bleep, phone refused to charge. Same as plugging in via the PC.

I turn the phone off, put the charger in and what do you know - it works.

so how could this be hardware? when i wake up tomorrow im gonna try 1 last time by factory resetting and wiping all cache via the bootloader menu. if that still does not work then i`ll just give up and hand the phone in for either repair or replacement.

it's under warranty at the moment anyway. i just really dont need this shit in life and cant do my job without my phone and my maps / navigation :(

after waking up this morning and looking at my phone, it was constantly flashing the 1st page on the phone menu on and off, even though i had the phone turned OFF and left it on charge.

after removing the cable, the screen went blank. i pressed home button and nothing. pressed power button and nothing. held power button down and phone turns on.

it was fully charged at least. however once again the same problems persisted. the screen kept blinking on and off even without me touching it.

i wiped cache partition and tried and then i factory reset. after factory reset it seemed ok but it still had blinking screen at times. i then decided to enable all of the apps i disabled in root app delete, remove root with supersu, and then once again factory reset and wiped usb storage so that the phone is 100% stock out of the box.

So far, so good. it has been 4 hours now and i havent noticed any flashing screen or driving mode chaos. however i am scared to plug the charger in. i tried plugging in 2 different chargers this morning and it does not do anything. nudging the connector in slightly and gently makes the phone recognise a charge however place it down on a surface and the charge dissapears again.

i have been to a three store local to me and they pathetically didnt have any loan phones to give me while this went off for repair. they also said they dont take any phones in for a repair until every friday, so it wouldnt make a difference if i gave it in this thursday or today. so i decided to stick with it for the time being.

however, if the micro USB port is really damaged - can anyone here please help me? where can i buy a micro USB port replacement for the S2 and is it possible for me to open up the phone and simply remove the one i have and place the new one in? is it just screws and connectors or is it too complicated like soldering?

also can i please get some advice and support in general and please tell me to try something i might have missed?

i need this phone for my job and its monday tomorrow.

i think i fixed this. i found this video and i followed it through.

How To Clean + Fix your Andorid Phone's Micro USB Charging Port - YouTube

now when i did it i did just the upper section of the port and did not do anything with the very thin section at the bottom of the port - still nothing helped except i finally got the phone to take and hold a charge BUT the driving mode app started popping up again.

i didnt have anything needle like thin enough to fit in the bottom section so i took a brush i have as part of a hair clipper set and i just grabbed a few brush ends and carefully placed them into that very thin gap and scrapped left to right for a few seconds.

after doing that as well as the upper section, i got the phone back on and plugged the charger in and now...

instant charge, every single time. been on charge for 2 hours now and ive been watching it like a hawk - literally. no driving mode app pop ups, no freezes or crashes, no losing charge. ive been pressing home button to light the screen up every 5 mins and checking to ensure it still is charging which it is so far as i am typing this.

i also checked with the USB cable into the pc and now...

every single time instantly holds charge and stays there and finally the PC is able to notice it as a media device EVERY time i plug it in, whereas before it sometimes would just charge and not recognise a media device.

so far i am convinced this is fixed. im going to keep monitoring it for the rest of the day and when its charged 100% im gonna play carmageddon and im hoping nothing bad happens, as last night playing it the driving mode pop ups and freezes infuriated me and caused the game to crash back to home screen all the time. if i can get through 1 hour of playing with nothing happening and it continues like it is to not have the previous symptoms i am confident that this is finally resolved.

to ensure this never happens again, or is less likely to happen again i am getting this, and recommend anyone else who wants to prevent it to also get it:

with that always plugged in with the phone, it's impossible for any dirt or other crap to get into the phone's port. so it's effectively a foolproof cover for your port. it also on the other hand is a benefit with the extra battery power it provides. im also reading that you can actually use this with the 2000mah battery for the S2 with the compatible back plate for the S2 as well. a bit expensive but worth it to avoid the grief involved that i have experienced for the past 35 hours. weekend ruined but glad it turned out ok (so far).

i hope that really helps anyone else out there who may stumble across this and good luck to you on the problem. it always takes 1 person to fix it the hard way to give it easy to everyone else, heh :P
