Constantly connecting to wifi?

Hi, I'm brand new to smart phones and for some reason my HTC rhyme will randomly want to connect to wifi so this screen pops up with different local wifi connections but I always just ignore it. How do I get this screen to stop popping up or what is the reason that it is wanting to connect in the first place? Has anyone else had this problem?

Go to Settings > Wireless and Network > Wi-Fi > uncheck the box to turn Wifi off. Or uncheck the box for notify me when a connection is available.When you keep Wifi on, it will try to connect whenever Wifi is available and notify you about it.
