Help Contact confusion

Lurker
Hi, I am new to smartphones and just got the Intercept. I'm getting super frustrated and have spent hours trying to figure this out, to no avail. I have read a lot of posts related to the google contacts but I'm just not getting it :(. I'm sure the answer must be somewhere in all the posts I've read but apparently I just have a brain block regarding this subject. I've spent hours now screwing with what seems to be a pretty basic thing..can anyone help me?

I am trying to set up contacts on my phone. I want them on my phone to be displayed in groups (work, hotels, family, friends etc). I want them to sync up with online google contacts. I thought this was the whole point of using google contacts rather than just regular phone contacts.

When I save a contact I have the choice of "phone" or "google". If I save it as "phone" I am give the option to save it to a group that I assign, but it will not synch with google on the web. If I save it as google (saving it on the phone), it will sync up with google on the web but I do not have the option when setting it up to save to a particular group. I can go the google on the web and create groups and assign contacts to groups. When I go back to my phone, I can then see the groups in the "display options" where you check which groups to show. I have the appropriate ones checked. When I go to the contact list however, all google contacts are just grouped in one "google" group and not in the groups that I have assigned them to on the web. If I cannot display my google numbers in groups on my phone, I don't understand the point of having groups assigned on the web. To organize my contacts on my phone, the only way I can see to organize them into groups is to use the "phone" option when saving them...which means they will not sync up online with my google contacts. Is this correct? It doesn't seem right. Why do I have the option in my phone under "display options" to display my google groups, if when they are checked they still do not display but are lumped together in one group? I feel as if I'm missing some basic concept here and I'm about to tear my hair out! Can anyone understand my confusion and help clear this up for me?

Thank you so much

Ok, I think I have found the answer...that I cannot do what I was trying to due to having the 2.1 operating system. I apologize for my frustrated sounding post above!
